AIBU to think that people who have been vaccinated against flu shouldnt moan at people who get ill

Ok I probably am. But i am ill, its nearly chirstmas and my 2 year old was just sick down the side of my head - so humour me.

Most of the rest of my family for one reason or another fall into at risk groups (almost all through age)so have been vaccinated. I have not and children have not. I am ill - I have a temp of 40 degrees, my throat feels like I swallowed broken glass, every single part of my body aches, I really think i have flu. I have already been ill for 4 days as have the children. We did call doctor for advice but pretty much as we know its rest, fluids, paracetamol.

BUT apart from dh (who has been totally fab - worked from home, looked after all 5 kids and done all housework while dosing me with paracetamol and providing hours of christmas films for me to watch) the rest of my family inform me its def not flu it is a cold and that I am being ridiculous expecting my dh to "care for me" (never mind the fact that I do the exact same thing when he is ill). They then moan at me for not wanting to attend a panto or go christmas shopping.

Seriously they are not ill cant they just let me have this??

AIBU?

I agree, im ill at the moment can relate to the swollen broken glass feeling!, not flu though as last time i had flu i was bedbound and wouldnt of been typing here. Its not a cold though so some sort of virus. I only got over sickness bug a couple of weeks ago so people think 'you cant be ill again!' well yes i am! and no its not an excuse to get out of christmas visiting.

5dcsandallthelittlesantahats · 21/12/2012 11:58

Allonsy yesterday and day before i just slept but today just feel up to typing on phone Grin.
The funny thing is most of the people moaning at me are the type to book an urgent appointment over the slightest thing !

aw its horrible isnt it, with the sickness bug i was in bed for 3 days just slept pretty much the full time its horrid. I hope your feeling better soon. Im hoping this is the peak of how crap im going to feel and its not going to develop into bedbound territory at christmas which is just my luck tbh

upstart68 · 21/12/2012 12:03

God you're not allowed to be ill if you have dc are you.

Have a rest while you can and ignore them all. Xmas will happen one way or another.

This won't help you now but somebody recommended taking zinc to me around October. Normally this time of year I'd have either tonsilitis or a stinking cold. I've had nothing! It really does work. You take it if you feel the slightest sign of a cold and it just disappears. But you have to take it in the really early stages. DD has come home with some hideous viruses and I've caught none of them as yet.

Hope you feel better soon.

ChristmasJubilee · 21/12/2012 12:05

I fall into an 'at risk' category and have had the flu jab. I am Ill at the moment with (probably) the same virus as you so you couldn't prevent that. You could, however, have a flu jag in any pharmacy for a small cost if you wanted to protect yourself, and therefor your children, from flu so YABU.

Kayano · 21/12/2012 12:15

I'd rather have flu for a month than a needle as I have a phobia and the rest of the world can suck it

PoppyWearer · 21/12/2012 12:26

Kayano have you looked into the nose spray? I got myself and my DCs vaccinated privately and my 4yo DD was given a nasal spray, no jab. I still had a jab, so don't know if that option is available for adults?

healstorturepeople · 21/12/2012 12:47

I very much doubt you have flu if you are posting on here. You have a bad cold.

I had flu once. It was absolutely horrendous. I remember crawling to the toilet as I couldn't walk. I also (embarrasingly) remember peeing myself a number of times as I lost pelvic floor control when I coughed badly.

I was off work for a week - went back for a day, fainted and was then off another few days. I went back to work way too soon. I was covered in coldsores and looked like a walking coldsore.

There wasn't a muscle I had that didn't ache and I was so weak I could barely move. There was no film watching or laying on the sofa and certainly nothing with bright lights like a computer. I couldn't get down the stairs.

The terms cold and flu are used far too interchangably IMO.

SugarplumMary · 21/12/2012 13:02

Family spent years telling me I wasn't as ill as I was.

I really was struggling to get upstairs or down the street - I really was having high temperatures and feeling wiped out.

A neighbour witnessed me struggling to get down the road insisted I see someone- turns out I had asthma and recurrent chest infections and probably had all the previous difficult winters when I?d been very ill.

Ignore them.

5dcsandallthelittlesantahats · 21/12/2012 13:06

heals - I understand but thats hardly the point, I feel like shit why shouldnt I be allowed to feel like shit/be looked after. I havent been ill like this for years so its not as though its a monthly thing!

Oh and on the coldsores thing - did you find anything that worked to help, I have awful coldsores (I get them any time I get even the slightest thing) I have two on my top lip and the roof of my mouth is sort of swollen - not ulcers but like i dont know - blistery...

Just because OP is able to use a laptop doesn't mean it's not flu, especially if she's 4 days into the illness and probably over the worst. I had flu a couple of years ago and on the worst day I could hardly remain awake or move - I remember lying in bed, thirsty, knowing that there was a drink on the bedside table but not even having the energy to reach my arm across to pick up the glass of water! The following day I was able to sit up and read though.

I think that everyone should think about getting vaccinated as the vaccine so widely available at pharmacies and supermarkets now. This year I paid £7.50 to get vaccinated at Asda. For anyone with a paid job who would lose wages if they were off sick the vaccine is a very sensible investment.

NilentSight · 21/12/2012 13:12

I have been ill SINCE I got the flu vaccine. I won't be getting it next year.
Kids have all started with nasty coughs in the last few days so am expecting a snotty Christmas!

EasilyBored · 21/12/2012 13:18

I'm ill too, so have lots of sympathy for you OP. I have a sinus infection coupled with some other symptoms of a virus - vomiting, fever and chills, sweats, aches and my throat is really swollen. DH is away, so I put DS (not ill) in nursery for an extra day today.

Surely you shouldn't have to go visit people when you're that ill, what if you spread it around just in time for Christmas?

HintofBream · 21/12/2012 14:14

I've had the flu jab but now have a horrible runny cold. Can anyone recommend an over-the-counter potion which will dry up the runnies? The ones we have in the house all offer to clear a blocked nose which is the opposite of what I want. Hoping to chase away cold sores by rubbing on Vectavir after every nose wipe.

No, the kids would need a prescription, but the reason for including family of immune suppressed people in the 'high risk' category is because the more people that are immunised in the home the less chance there is of the unprotected being exposed to it. By being vaccinated you are protecting those around you.

5dc's I get terrible cold sores and I don't find anything topically works. The only thing that is any use is oral acyclovir. Not all GP's will be keen to prescribe it. I was 'lucky' to be seen when I had them all round and in my mouth but when I initially asked I was told it was 'overkill'. Mmmmmmm I don't think so!

PoppyWearer · 22/12/2012 09:54

You can get the DCs vaccinated at a private GP without prescription. Costs a bit more, but I think it's worth it.

CurrentBun · 22/12/2012 09:57

Sound like you have a wicked cold rather than flu. Still a friggin nightmare if you have kids.....and you have 5!!!! Personally I'd give you a medal just for that. Hope you feel better soon.

stargirl1701 · 22/12/2012 09:58

I think you might have tonsillitis.

lovelyladuree · 22/12/2012 10:30

You definitely don't have flu. You wouldn't be able to lift your arms to type on MN if you had flu. Flu kills people, that's why vunerable people are vacccinated against it. You have a cold/virus/tonsilitis.
