to aspire never to spend a single pound in Tesco again

I ordered a lot of the kids Christmas presents through Tesco direct (wouldn't normally but double clubcard exchange = half price). Went to pick them up from local store to learn that they had been sent back the previous day as I had not picked them up within two weeks. Went home to re-read email with two week warning but no mention of two week requirement, even in the small print. Also no email warning me items were returned, to save me the trip to local store. So dh and I had taken the day off whilst kids were in nursery to prepare for Christmas and had to spend the whole time trying to find the presents in the shops.

I phoned to complain and the (very bored sounding) customer service person told me items were never scanned out of the store so if I hadn't phoned I never would have recieved a refund. They told me to email my complaint instead of registering it over the phone (don't think they could be bothered to deal with it). Emailed complaint - three days later still waiting for response..

I know this isn't the end of the world but I just get really would up by these big companies with no customer service. I used to reckon I spent 1 in every 2 pounds in Tesco with food, petrol etc but gave up food deliveries from them as they were horrendously unreliable (tried Sainsburys and haven't looked back).

They wasted so much of my time that I really feel like I am due an apology.

You had nothing to complain about.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 20/12/2012 19:43

But you only emailed 3 days ago, give them chance to respond!

FeelingFestiveCheerMum · 20/12/2012 19:46

Sorry that your dc were ill, but surely either you or your Dh could have spared half an hour to go and pick the things up?

Catsdontcare · 20/12/2012 19:49

Sorry I hate tesco with a passion but I too think yabu. Two weeks is plenty of time for either yourself or your Dh to go and pick them up. Imagine if they kept everyone's stuff for over two weeks.

SayMama · 20/12/2012 20:01

We will get in touch to let you know that your product is in store and ready for collection. We will hold products in store for a maximum of 14 days. Orders that are not picked up within 14 days will be returned and you will be refunded.

sorry but I found that in about 5 seconds flat in their Ts&Cs.

Have you been able to get replacements? And yes, H,F&M is a bugger! I had it myself in the summer it's horrid!

Justreadthefuckingwords · 20/12/2012 20:13

I'm going to go against the grain here & say YANBU, I haven't spent a pound in Tescos for the last ten years, they're 'orrible.

Save your soul & denounce them forever.

But yes, if you read the T &Cs - you should have picked them up sooner.

You dance with the Devil.....

ViperInTheManger · 20/12/2012 20:17

I would be cross in your position but just to put another side to this. I had a case of wine not delivered, I rang them, they apologised, refunded the full amount plus £20 as an apology.

I totally agree Tesco are awful at customer complaints. MIL bought a digital camera from them which turned out to be faulty.

Tesco refused to replace it because she'd thrown away the box (she had the receipt). In the case of faulty goods the law is they should replace, even if a customer has thrown away the box.

More than that, the man at Tesco was rude to her. MIL is not terribly mobile, but had to go in three times trying to get somewhere (the last time, armed with copies of consumer rights law we'd sent her).

In the end, DP phoned Tesco head office to raise hell complain. They were very apologetic. MIL was given a replacement, and the local dick manager was made to apologise to her, in person!

I'm not keen on Asda for one reason and another, but I have to say I can't fault their customer service. Their staff always seem happy, and pleased to help.

YANBU to never want to shop with Tesco

YABU to never want to shop with Tesco for the reasons you've given

AmberLeaf · 20/12/2012 20:23

YABU because they only did what it states clearly in the T&Cs that they would do.

Why didn't you just have them delivered?

MsElleTow · 20/12/2012 20:25

They messed up an order I did with click and collect in store, but it was the store not the other end. They couldn't have been more apologetic and helpful, delivered the product to my house and gave me a gift card.

You are told you get 14 days to pick it up. I don't really see what you have to complain about TBH!

BigShinyBaubles · 20/12/2012 20:48

YABU, It was your fault you didn't collect the parcels. So you have notjing to complain about. Why didn't you pay to have them delivered to your home?
I've never had any problems with any orders I've placed at Tesco. To blame them is completely wrong

propertyNIGHTmareBEFOREXMAS · 20/12/2012 21:12

Yabu. If everyone decided to use their local Tesco store as a free indefinite storage facility for their Christmas presents then the stores would soon become unworkably overloaded with goods. 2 weeks is plenty of time to collect. Even the most disorganised people should be able to work to that reasonable timescale.

InsertCleverNameChangeHere · 20/12/2012 21:12

I did a click and collect order at the start of Nov. There were three items, but the girl in the store only scanned two of them. This meant there was one left on the system which they thought I hadn't collected.

A week later I got an email telling me I had 48 hours to collect it before it was returned.

OTOH, I placed another order at the start of Dec. This time, I didn't even get an email to tell me my items had arrived in the store. If I hadn't collected them this time, I doubt I would have got an email to warn me.

Anyway, I think YANBU, their system is more than capable of sending out a reminder email.
