I'm in Oz. Whenever I've made a cup of tea or instant coffee...it has always seemed warm and not hot like it does in the UK

I thought maybe I wasn't catching the kettle when it had just boiled...so tonight, I watched, then as soon as it clicked off I made the tea. Drank it...it STILL seemed like a cup you'd left sitting on the table for 15 minutes.

It's not particularly hot here...so it's nothign to do with my temperature...there's a cool breeze coming in...it's nighttime....WHY can't I get a hot frigging cup of tea???

It's bad enough that Aussie tea is so weak!

It's taunting you.

This reminds me of that terrible 2 weeks I spent on holiday in Belgium where they didn't sell Irn Bru, the barbarians. WTAF??

I think a lot of the difference between a British cuppa and a forrin one is in the water. Even if we take boxes of PG Tips with us to France it still doesn't taste right. My mum drinks tea without milk and has said the same thing.

maddening · 20/12/2012 12:47

Microwave it for 1 min

MrsMushroom · 20/12/2012 12:49

Right so bottled water might improve things....and micro the water....will report back when I've tried these things!

Be careful!

Hate to be the harbinger of doom, but my friend's mum badly burnt her face boiling water in the microwave. It 'burst' out of the cup at her.

It sounds mad, but it's true. Please be really careful or just boil it in a saucepan.

SweetMingePie · 20/12/2012 13:06

As just going to be the bringer of doom and gloom, but I see Moaney has beat me there Xmas Grin

Boiling a cup of water is quite dangerous, best to do it on the stove if you need boiling water.

Is there a weird Australian law about kettles and the temperature here allowed to boil to?

Boiling a cup of water in a microwave

The boiling point of water decreases 1 °C every 285m of elevation so are you at sea level? But that's not normally an issue outside of mountains...

Is it actually boiling - can you see the steam from the kettle?

VegemiteSandwich · 20/12/2012 13:33

Adelaide WATER is shit. Maybe try with rain/bottled/filter water?

Adelaide is only 50m above sea level, so it's not the altitude affecting it. Probably something to do with the water.

Try and buy bottled water with a low mineral content, otherwise it a) won't taste very nice and b) the minerals will be concentrated due to evaporation and consequently not very good for you.

Is it one of those kettles that heats the water to 70c rather than boiling?
