IV Sedation.......tooth extraction.

Am I being unreasonable to be absolutely shitting myself, thinking that at 9.15am tomorrow I will be sedated and having my teeth yanked out!!!

Has anyone had this done? I'm such a wuss when it comes to the dentist. I've had this decaying tooth in my gob for 4 years Blush......and another one broken next to it......Confused

Anyway they need to come out as I've had the most severe tooth ache ever! I would certainly rather give birth again, and I only did that 6 months ago.

Has anyone undergone this method of tooth extraction? It's IV sedation where the dentist drugs you and apparently you feel drunk but not asleep. You then 'wake up' and can't remember anything even though you've been awake through the whole procedure.

Like I said I'm shitting myself but I need some reassurance!

Hi everyone! Thanks for all the messages of reassurance!!!

They're out! Wooo I'm so proud of myself. In the end I opted to not have the sedation. I thought about it and figured I actually wouldn't like to not remember what happened. Also not being able to look after my 6month old baby girl for 24hours would have killed me! So I braved it and it wasn't as bad as I thought. Injections in the gums didn't hurt at all. Took the dentist less than 10mins to take out two badly decayed molars. I don't like this numb feeling much though.

I'll be honest I panicked when I first felt the numbness so they let my DP in. Which helped a lot! He's really proud I've had it done as I was a blubbering fool at home this morning. I've had about 4hours sleep as I kept waking up to have a cry.

I'm expecting an early Christmas present for being such a brave girl.GrinSmileWink

Ooh, well done you! Very happy for you (you're braver than me!) Grin

nannynick · 20/12/2012 10:55

Well done, very brave having it done without the sedation. I've had several out without sedation but those were ones which the dentist could get a good grip on, whereas the two I had out with sedation were mere remains.

Bet you are glad it's over.

OwllwOOwllwO · 20/12/2012 11:16

So glad it's all over, I'd rather this then have toothache. I felt like smashing my head up the wall.

I still have to get two filling done after the new year which I guess will be piss easy after today.

Dental sedation is amazing!
I had a really STUCK tooth cut out... I was terrified! He put the cannula in, I felt it go cold, started sobbing then they were saying it was all done! I couldn't talk properly coherently for about an hour and was apparently gabbling about random things on the way home Grin then crashed on the sofa for a few hours!
The infection afterwards was far far worse!! It's a bit Wierd not being able to 'remember' it when you know that you were awake....but it's not a distressing memory in any way!

lovelyladuree · 20/12/2012 14:25

What are we you teaching our your children if we you can't even have a filling without being drugged up to the eyeballs?

BridgetBidet · 20/12/2012 15:09

I had that done. I was in the middle of telling my doctor what I did for a living when they sedated me and when I came round I just carried on with the same conversation thinking I had just blinked or something and hadn't even realised I'd had the surgery.

MadSleighLady · 20/12/2012 15:30

Oh well done Owll!

You should have had the sedation though, it's ace. Xmas Grin

luverly my DC do not come to see me being treated at the dentist and due to my severe phobia, their Dad takes them so they are unaffected by it. Thanks for your concern though!

luverly firstly it wasn't a filling it was two molar extractions. I've never had one before so I was nervous and in the end I wasn't drugged up. Oh and my DS (9) had a baby tooth taken out as he had a abscess and he was given gas and wasn't scared one bit. This morning before he went to school he told me not to be scared that I'll be alright.

i have a very bad gagging situation when it comes to dentist will the iv sedation stop the gagging.

TiggyD · 03/01/2015 16:54

Zombie thread but I'll let you off this time.

You will be so spaced out that you will be totally incapable of everything. It's great fun! Grin

It's a lot like a general anaesthetic. I had 4 teeth dug out. It felt like 3 minutes of having the tartar scraped off. It was actually an hour. And you will need looking after for the rest of the day. I actually needed the day after off too.

CaLiArcAngel2 · 03/01/2015 16:59

sorry I'm new to this thanks man i really needed this

TiggyD · 03/01/2015 17:07

Good luck.

Nanny0gg · 03/01/2015 17:20

I've had fillings with every kind of sedation you can, let alone extraction!

Luckily I'm not quite so bad now (it's taken 50-odd years!).

I would recommend it. It's horrible being so scared and it really does make you able to cope. And yes it helps (afaik) with the gagging (I suffer from that too!)

Hatespiders · 03/01/2015 17:34

Sedation is brilliant. You really don't remember anything about what was done. And no side effects, just drowsiness (and enormous relief!)
Well done op, and glad you're not scared about the fillings now.
