To ask for them to pay their half?

We had arranged a dinner with another couple this coming Saturday and I had bought and paid for a Groupon deal to cover a lovely 3-course Christmas meal in a fancy restaurant.

The couple have since split up due to possible cheating by one of them.

We've tried to find people to take their place at the meal but being so close to Christmas, everyone else already has plans, unsurprisingly.

Would I be unreasonable to ask for one of/them to reimburse me their half of the meal as I have already paid for it??? I can't get a refund on their half or the whole voucher Hmm

Probably not unreasonable, but possibly insensitive. How much is their half?

Purple2012 · 19/12/2012 21:15

I think they probably have enough to worry about at the moment. I would leave it, at least for now.

SantasENormaSnob · 19/12/2012 21:15

They should still pay but I bet it's the last thing on their mind atm.

Monty27 · 19/12/2012 21:16

A bit insensitive, they're probably both upset. Can't you get someone else to come along?

MissChristmastRee · 19/12/2012 21:18

Their half is just over £50. I very much doubt that DP and I will go alone as the kids have been poorly but if they hadn't pulled out, we probably would have made the effort to go.

DP suggested the cheating party brought their new "OH" Blush

We tried to find someone else Monty but all our other friends are busy!

Are your children old enough to come with you?

MissChristmastRee · 19/12/2012 21:21

DS is 7 and a ridiculously fussy eater and DD is an 11 month old dustbin! The table isn't booked til 8 so a bit late for DD really.

You'd be really insensitive to ask.

How much is it?

nancy75 · 19/12/2012 21:23

Make the effort to go anyway. I do t see a way you could ask either of them without seeming quite nasty, It's a difficult one.

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells · 19/12/2012 21:23

That's life, it's shit.
A break up just before Christmas must be Hell, have a lovely evening just you and your DH, and be thankful, it's not you.

BridgetBidet · 19/12/2012 21:26

Jesus YABU. 'I am so sorry to hear that you've split up, how terribly just before Christmas, but can I just remind you that you owe me £50? Hello...hello...are you still there?'

MissChristmastRee · 19/12/2012 21:26

It's £50 we can ill afford to lose but I guess that's a risk I took when I paid for it up front. I'm just going to have to suck it up, aren't I?

can you postphone or often with groupon I've asked them to refund and they have as long as the deal hasn't expired. Not sure I would ask for their half.

goodygumdrops · 19/12/2012 21:30

Surely they will offer you the money? I wouldn't ask because I would imagine they would give it to me without my needing to ask. £50 is a lot of money!

NagooHoHoHo · 19/12/2012 21:39

Sorry I'm on a time-lag here Blush

worsestershiresauce · 19/12/2012 21:39

If you really need the money make sure you ask the cheating party. It is their fault, and their poor partner must be feeling awful as it is.

I wouldn't ask personally.

Blu · 19/12/2012 21:46

I bet the restaurant would be happy to let you re-book and take a booking from new cutomers at full price! Worth a try, anyway.

Send out an e mail to all your frineds and contacts asking if anyone wants to buy the table for 4 from you and 'accidentally' include the cheating parties e mail in the list

ginmakesitallok · 19/12/2012 21:47

YABU - thnk about the shit time they must be going through and then consider how important your £50 is.

HeadfirstForAMistletoeKiss · 19/12/2012 22:01

Do they know you have already paid for the meal or were they expecting to pay on the night?

maddening · 19/12/2012 22:10

See if you can re-book for lunchtime and take the children ?

justmyview · 19/12/2012 22:12

YABU

smearedinfood · 19/12/2012 22:13

Can you ask just one of them and get them to bring a friend? Then they can have your sympathy ear for the evening..,

HollyBerryBush · 19/12/2012 22:14

It depends on whether you can afford to lose the money for two seats.

If you were expecting it back, budgetted for it - then harsh as it sounds - there is no way you should subsidise another couples break up.

These theings are always sorted out by one half of a couple - either you and she decided it was a good idea to go out to dinner of DP and the other bloke did. Either way, if you cant get another couple to go with you, it's your loss.

Although I've never seen a groupon voucher that requires payment upfront. I know they are heavily discounted, but even so.

XBenedict · 19/12/2012 22:14

I think YABU, sounds like life is a bit tough for them at them moment. Have a bit of sympathy maybe?
