(sorry it's not really AIBU but need quick help!)

I'm supposed to be making truffles now while DC sleep. Except I've fallen at the first hurdle - I can't find my Pyrex bowl to put over the pan of hot water!

What else can I use to melt the choc please? Can I do it in the microwave? I'm a bit nervous about that but if needs must...

TIA

Yes you can melt chocolate in the microwave, but watch it carefully, stir it because it doesn't break down in the same way as when you melt it on the cooker.

Pagwatch · 19/12/2012 13:39

Do you not have any kind of bowl. Any ceramic bowl?

Don't microwave!

HappyHippyChick · 19/12/2012 13:39

If you melt it in the microwave heat it on low and stir v frequently.

takataka · 19/12/2012 13:41

A metal bowl..but don't have water touching the bottom

BobbysBeardOfWonder · 19/12/2012 13:42

Yes I have normal bowls Grin I'll try with one of those the normal way. Microwaving makes me Confused

You can do it in the microwave, but you need to do it in bursts as it burns really easily. I'd probably do it in a normal bowl over a lower heat. I've also held a pyrex jug over the pan, but I have asbestos hands...

Good luck! I'm doing truffles, fudge and peanut brittle (also sugar mice, but they don't count) this year as Christmas presents, rather looking forward to doing it this weekend Xmas Grin.

x posts, slow typing Xmas Sad.

Sorry I can't help on the choc melting part but if anyone would like to share their truffle recipes I would be very grateful Smile

fairylightsandtinsel · 19/12/2012 13:50

put the cream in the pan and heat it gently, then just break the choc directly into it - on a low heat its fine

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 19/12/2012 13:53

Oh, put it in the microwave. Nigella isn't going to come round and slap you.

FrozenYogurt · 19/12/2012 13:59

I second what Fairy said - heat the cream gently and let the heat if the cream melt the chocolate. The trick to melting chocolate is to do it gently and slowly, otherwise it goes all grainy. Chop it up into chunks first of course. Truffles, yum!

ICBINEG · 19/12/2012 14:02

I do mine in the microwave....have only ever had a problem with white choc because of the higher fat content. Now white choc you have to watch like a hawk in the mw. still usually works though.

FrozenYogurt · 19/12/2012 14:02

good truffle recipes

Ephiny · 19/12/2012 14:03

I would use an ordinary bowl, it doesn't need to be Pyrex just for immersing in hot water. I wouldn't microwave, as I've burnt/ruined chocolate that way before :(, though apparently it can be done if you're careful.

(if you use a metal bowl, be careful not to get it stuck in the pan as the metal expands with heat)

MrsKeithRichards · 19/12/2012 14:04

I always do it in the microwave, less faff!

BobbysBeardOfWonder · 19/12/2012 14:34

First stage is complete! Thanks for the emergency help Smile I found a silicone mat and put it at the bottom of the pan with the bowl of choc on top.

This is the recipe I use

Although it's my first attempt so will see if they're any good!
