AIBU for wanting a copper coil?

PinkSnow · 19/12/2012 13:07

DP has got it into his head that copper coils are probably about 25% reliable as he himself was a copper coil baby. I have told him numerous times the coils are much better these days and it would pretty much be a miracle if i was to fall pregnant. I am NOT having anything hormonal as i've tried them all and i have a history of anxiety. Hes the unreasonable one.

YANBU - your body, therefore your choice.

If he doesn't like it tell him to get the snip.

whois · 19/12/2012 13:09

Make an appointment at the family planning clinic and discuss together. They can give you hard facts.

PinkSnow · 19/12/2012 13:12

Shown him the leaflets that say 99 percent. Apparantly thats a load of crap, would get him snipped but want another baby in a few years. He listens to his mother too much, sighs. Her copper coil was probably rusty. Anyway im getting it, just you watch me fall pregnant now and he proves me right (lol)

My friend has had the copper coil for the same reasons, she didnt want anything with hormones. It is very reliable now so it will be fine!! Don't be pushed into something hormonal if you are dead set against it, stick to your guns :)

CuriosityKilledTheCrapTree · 19/12/2012 13:17

I just sorted out contraception. I was staggered to learn the mirena is more reliable than sterilisation!! Shock

Btw mirena defaults to mittens on my iPhone. Now that would be a miracle!

CuriosityKilledTheCrapTree · 19/12/2012 13:18

I know you're not asking about that btw but am still pondering it!

Ishtar2410 · 19/12/2012 13:26

Spoke to the GP a while ago about being sterilised - she said they wouldn't do it because it was more cost-effective for them to fit a mirena coil. I currently have a copper coil, which I have had on and off for 10 years now (I'm on my third one), and have found it very reliable.

Can't have (don't want) a mirena, even though it would sort out my progressively more erratic periods..but that's probably a subject for another thread Xmas Smile

PinkSnow · 19/12/2012 13:31

I've never heard of anyone have a copper coil failure in recent times.

MulledVodkaAndXmasMincePies · 19/12/2012 13:40

The difference in failure between copper and mirena coils is .something if a percent. Yes it still happens occasionally but it can and does with both types.

Also I'm on my second copper coil (and had no problems) because hormonal contraceptives disagree with me.

Conflugenglugen · 19/12/2012 13:43

Love my copper coil, I do. Hormone-free, and has worked so far (3 years).

Spuddybean · 19/12/2012 13:48

i would only have a copper coil. i don't want hormone ones which the doctors keep trying to convince me to have. i have had 4 coils since 16 years old and never had a problem.

where has he got 25% from?

WizardofOs · 19/12/2012 13:52

I have one and trust it and I would be very upset to get pregnant again. Has had negative effect on my periods though.

SoldeInvierno · 19/12/2012 13:55

I have had a copper coil for 6 years now, and I am very happy with it. I didn't want any extra hormones in my body, so I went for this option

NumericalMum · 19/12/2012 13:56

I love mine. Periods a bit worse for 6 months and now fine. Quick, easy and no hormones!

MadBanners · 19/12/2012 14:00

I have a copper coil, it is fab, had no issues. And I got pregnant when Ds was 7 months old and before I had even had a period as I was bfing. After DD, I got the coil as soon as possible!

twooter · 19/12/2012 14:03

I had horrendous periods when I had one, so be aware they don't suit everyone.

PinkSnow · 19/12/2012 14:07

probably his mother Spuddy. Well im supposed to call them the 1st day of my period to have it fitted within 7 days. Im due on tomorrow as im spotting today so doubt they will fit me in now over the xmas period.

OP posts:
TrudiRed · 19/12/2012 14:11

I've got one and have had light regular periods since it was fitted after 3rd child (periods never regular before children). I also wanted to be sterilised but was told no. No probs to put in and no bother since (2 1/2 years) Mine lasts for 10 years. I have had more than one person tell me they knew someone who got pregnant with one but you can say that about all contraception can't you?

PersonalClown · 19/12/2012 14:17

I'm on my second one.
I know more people who got pregnant on the pill (not taking correctly/medicines affecting reliability etc) than did on the coil.

I only know of one person who got pregnant on the coil and that was 18 years ago.
Medicine/contraception has advanced.

BelleoftheFall · 19/12/2012 14:28

He needs to do some research into statistics. One data point means NOTHING, one example means nothing- especially when it's for a different type of coil that was used 30 years ago. He can't decide that it's a 25% failure rate when there has been proper, scientific research that says it is much much lower.

fixarupa · 19/12/2012 14:42

Well mine somehow "fell out" and I had absolutely no idea (until the positive pregnancy test.) However I do know that they are very reliable, equal to the combined pill. Not as good as the Mirena which is equal to female sterilisation. But whichever one you have it is fairly important to know that it is still in situ!!

I will never forget to check for the strings again. Incidently, don't let them trim the strings too short as you won't be able to feel them.
My husband is due for vasectomy as soon as possible.

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/12/2012 14:44

Yanbu - I have one,it's great.

I think copper coils have moved on somewhat in terms of reliability since your DH was conceived,he's being silly.

Opheliac · 19/12/2012 16:44

If he doesn't feel it's enough then he could always wear a condom in addition to you having one, a safety net won't hurt! :)

HairyGrotter · 19/12/2012 16:46

I have the copper coil as they wouldn't sterilise me due to my age. It's perfect, hormonal contraception fucks with my melon man, so I decided on the copper coil and it has held up wonderfully thus far.

tweetie1550 · 19/12/2012 23:06

Hi there, I had a copper coil fitted and about 4 months later discovered we were expecting a little bundle of joy!
