To wonder if you really flush the poo?

I have recently been informed that apparently if you use disposable nappies then before you chuck them in the bin you are supposed to put any solid poo down the loo and flush it away.

I didn't know this because I've never used disposables.

Lots of people have asked me or told me if/ that dealing with reusable ones is gross because of having to get rid of the poo, I'm guessing this means they don't flush it and just wrap and bin.

So do you flush the poo then bin the nappy,or just bin.

I know I'm bu to ask but I really want to know.

I always flush the poo. Always did for my own and do for childminded babies and toddlers too.

I will never ever forget the day I dropped a large on from one of my charges into the loo from a little higher than normal and the splashback WENT IN MY MOUTH!!! Shock I have never felt so sick and got through a lot of mouthwash that day.

Please let this sorry tale be a lesson to you all. If you flush the poo always close your mouth Sad

julieann42 · 19/12/2012 09:02

I always wrapped the nappy up and binned, never occurred to me to flush the poo!

surroundedbyblondes · 19/12/2012 09:04

When DD1 got to the stage of having more solid poos I would put them in the loo. DD2 still has rather sticky/sludgy ones so I bag and take to the outside bin immediately.

Would never contemplate having a poo nappy in an indoor bin though, for any length of time. Ugggh.

FlojoHoHoHo · 19/12/2012 09:04

I never did this, never even crossed my mind to either. Nappy got wrapped and thrown straight in the outside bin.

FlojoHoHoHo · 19/12/2012 09:05

Ewww gold poor you!

BeyondStuffedWithXmassyGoodies · 19/12/2012 09:08

I bin. Very rarely change DS2 in the bathroom! Xmas Wink

Curious, am I supposed to in theory pick out bits off poo from tortoise tank and flush them? (In reality, it all gets composted)

ScarfHatSunglasses · 19/12/2012 09:10

I'd never heard of this until the thread the other day. So I thought I'd try it and its sooo much better than having an utterly stinking bin. Luckily the contents are very easily removed from the nappy. Wish someone had mentioned before I only had dc3 in nappies Hmm Grin

sockmuppet · 19/12/2012 09:10

Definitely flushed here

CreamOfTomatoSoup · 19/12/2012 09:13

With reusables I use the shower head to spray off liquid poo but plop solid poo into the loo. I will plop a solid poo in a disposable if I'm near a loo but won't go out of my way to find a loo.

HardHittingLeafletCampaign · 19/12/2012 09:16

Not sure flushing isn't worse. Unless your child has perfectly formed poos there will still always be some in the nappy and then you're wasting gallons of water flushing too. Seems silly. And don't get me started on Wokingham Borough Council and their bloody blue bags.

CharlieMouseWillDoIt · 19/12/2012 09:16

I never flush. DD is almost two, but her poos are still very soft and would need A LOT of scraping to get off the nappy. Also, our bathroom literally isn't big enough for her to lay down to have her nappy changed, so wrapping it up and putting it in a nappy bag is far preferable to walking through the house with a poo-filled nappy. I also put pooey nappies directly in the outside bin, so no stinky nappies indoors.

RubyGates · 19/12/2012 09:20

Most flushable liners are made of stuff that will go through the wash a couple of times at least (which I discovered by accidentally washing some that hadn't been taken out of the washable nappies). So any that had just been wee'd in got washed and used again. Any that had been pooed in got flush. So no waste of liners.

HousewifefromBethlehem · 19/12/2012 09:22

My dog poo goes in the loo, my downstairs toilet is next to the back door. It would make me feel ill in the bin, even in a doggie bag. But, I never put nappy poo in the toilet, always the bin Xmas Hmm mind I didn't have a downstairs loo then. Or a dog. Xmas Grin

TiredofZombies · 19/12/2012 09:30

It had never occurred to me to flush poo from a disposable nappy, and I don't intend to start doing it. I was all for re-useable nappies prior to having DD, but the reality of running through the house with a soggy, poo-filled nappy soon cured me of that. In winter if the woodburner is on, the nappies get chucked on there. All our waste is incinerated anyway, I might as well do it myself and get some warmth from it.

poshfrock · 19/12/2012 09:51

Both my children used reusable nappies and I never had to "run through the house" with them. Why on earth would you ? Unless you have a massive house and your toilet is miles from wherever you change your baby. I always changed both of mine on their changing mats in their bedroom. Bathroom was right next door.

poshfrock · 19/12/2012 09:53

And for all those who object to the poo "scraping" - this is why you use flushable, biodegradable liners. Just put the whole liner in the loo. If only wet and not dirty then wash and reuse.

babyphat · 19/12/2012 10:03

I flush if solid when I'm using disposables - mostly use washables. Otherwise it stinks out the bin. I hate it when visiting people put poo in the kitchen bin bleurgh.

TiredofZombies · 19/12/2012 10:06

Re: liners. If they are truly flushable, they must degrade pretty quickly on contact with water, right? Thus making them not washable. If they are washable, I doubt they are also flushable.

cocoachannel · 19/12/2012 10:10

Plop here! And currently showing DD how her poo goes in the loo and we wave 'bye-bye' - preliminary steps of potty training.

LaCiccolina · 19/12/2012 10:30

Wrapped and binned. I don't buy disposable to f about. If use terry otherwise.

Did I miss why u r supposed to? Never heard this b4.

valiumredhead · 19/12/2012 10:40

Wrapped and binned along with everyone I have ever known in my entire life apart from on MN

SantaWearsGreen · 19/12/2012 11:01

Never heard of this. I use reusables and so flush but never heard of anyone doing it with a disposable.. Weird.

RubyGates · 19/12/2012 11:03

They do seem to wash at least a couple of times. I only found out by accident, and I was surprised. But they do use some very industrial process down at t'old sewerage works, that I don't have access to at home.

StuntNun · 19/12/2012 11:11

Out of curiosity what do you do about pets then? I pick up my dog's poo in a bag and put it in my bin. When the cat had a litter tray I also bagged and binned her poo. Should this be flushed down the loo instead?

ChunkyPickle · 19/12/2012 11:20

I am not mucking about with nappies and toilets - not that it's even always feasible, and I'm certainly not mucking about with liners, and nappies, and toilets.

I wrap and bin. Our rubbish goes to incineration, so I'm not filling up landfill, and I'm pretty sure that the water company has been running a campaign about putting nothing but toilet paper (and poo) down the toilet, because even if it claims to be flushable (eg, moist toilet tissue) it bungs up the drains.
