to think this is not a well thought gift?

My dc's birthday was at the weekend, they were given a gadget that has plastered all over the box in numerous places that it requires another gadget for it to work.

I've just looked up the other gadget and it costs £85 to buy!!!

This makes the gift that my dc got completely redundant.

AIBU to think this is probably a recycled gift (something that was already in the house) or not a well thought present?

It does sound like a bad decision. Can you exchange it for something that your dc can use?
What was it btw?

Sirzy · 18/12/2012 12:19

I agree not very well thought out

Am intrigued what it is though!

peeriebear · 18/12/2012 12:19

Why not call the giver and say "I'm sorry but we can't use the gift you gave DC as it needs XX and we don't have one. Can you get your money back? It's just going to be a glorified doorstop otherwise."
They will either be able to swap it for something useful or will have to fess up that it was regifted.

milkysmum · 18/12/2012 12:20

Sound a bit odd! What is it?

ReallyNotTotallyStupidPromise · 18/12/2012 12:20

What is it?

StickEmWithThePointyEnd · 18/12/2012 12:20

Depends who it's from. I remember receiving gifts from grandparents like what you have described however they didn't understand the product so it was an honest mistake. They were always thanked graciously and never told about the error!

Whosaysitstheseasontobejolly · 18/12/2012 12:23

It's a spy camera that plugs into a watch.

I would call whoever it was, thank them for the present, but say that there must have been some confusion as DS doesn't have the watch you need for it to work - so any chance of swapping it for something he can use. If I'd made the mistake I'd much rather you did this than just get rid of it. If it's family etc is there any chance they've got him the watch for christmas and just given them the wrong way around?

goodygumdrops · 18/12/2012 12:28

Might they be getting the ither bit for Christmas?

PottedShrimp · 18/12/2012 12:29

oh how ridiculous, so you have to buy the watch? Who gave it to you? Just tell them was there another part, as you need a watch to go with it.

goodygumdrops · 18/12/2012 12:29

X post - great minds !

Whosaysitstheseasontobejolly · 18/12/2012 12:30

Unfortunately not getting gift for Xmas - this is a school friend, and although they are generous they're not THAT generous Grin

It sounds like its been recycled ,I think you need to put it down to experience, personally I wouldn't say anything.

firawla · 18/12/2012 12:35

Can you ebay it and give him the money or is that part not worth enough to bother?

ShatnersBassoon · 18/12/2012 12:37

It's not well thought out, but I wouldn't care if it was something from a school friend. Charity shop it.

PottedShrimp · 18/12/2012 12:40

Was it given to more than one child? You say, your dc's birthday. Even more ridic if so, as you would need 2 watches

PiccadillyCervix · 18/12/2012 13:55

would definitely not say anything. It would be very rude, school friends have got no obligation to buy gifts. ebay it
