I think IANBU but am I just delusional?

dh has worked for the same company for 12 years, the managemen has changed hands a few times, but one thing that has never changed is that they are paid BEFORE Christmas in December - the Friday before. DH has just been told that this year they are being paid on the 28th!

This is a disaster for us, as we are bloody tight at the moment (I am an NQT and doing supply but no proper job yet)

and we started preparing for Christmas late this year for various reasons

basically we have budgeted for buying all our meat, food and drink this Friday, on payday - dh assumed it would be the same as every other year and I didn't question it (in fact I didn't know they hadn't confirmed it, or that there was even a risk of it not happening)

so.... we are in the shit! AIBU to be upset and think this is unnecessarily mean? The company is in profit etc, they are not struggling to pay people! Aaaaaarrrrgh!!

Nightmare - do you have a credit card? This is exactly what they're handy for, only spend what you were planning to and pay it off on payday.

Could your husband request early payment? It possibly could be an alteration to T&C as there is an historical precedent. Has he a Union to negotiate for him?
Hope things work out.

Greensleeves · 18/12/2012 11:42

no credit card, we don't trust ourselves with them!

he is emailing a complaint now but he doesn't expect to get anywhere. Fat rich cunts who won't notice the difference are making the decisions Angry

everlong Grin nope, no hard feelings

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 18/12/2012 11:43

That is shit. DH's work place stopped giving out Christmas bonuses a few years ago. No notice, just no bonus in the payslip one year. That was a bit hairy.

MaxPepsi · 18/12/2012 11:44

TWATS!!!

When is normal pay day?

Can you ask someone to pay for you and give them a cheque to bank on the 27th?

I take it the company is open on Xmas Eve and between new year?

ChessieFL · 18/12/2012 11:45

Does the new management know that Christmas payday is traditionally early? If all other paydays since they took over have been end of the month or whatever they might not know there's been a difference in December.

thestringcheesemassacre · 18/12/2012 11:45

That is really crap.
Can you get an emergency overdraft?

Skiffen · 18/12/2012 11:45

Poo.

Is there anyway of borrowing from anyone? It's for such a short time.

Don't suppose you're a member of a credit union? They do short loans.

Do not go to a payday loan company whatever you do.

Narked · 18/12/2012 11:45

I'd get in to see your bank and explain to them what's happened - they should be able to see from their records that the company's always paid your DH before Christmas in the past. They may agree to give you an agreed overdraft that will last until the 29th.

catsmother · 18/12/2012 11:45

YANBU.

If this has always been the case then to tell people now that it's not happening is crass. It doesn't take too much imagination surely to realise that many families would be depending on being paid early for Xmas spends.

I don't know about the legality of it but worth looking into as is asking for an early payment anyway. TBH the least they're owed is a bloody explanation because I'm not sure I can think of one other than of course company money earning a bit more interest because it stays in the bank longer.

Greensleeves · 18/12/2012 11:46

The management isn't that new, they paid on the Friday before Christmas last year and for a couple of years before, so they know it's the norm

We haven't even got a bloody turkey yet

WHY?!?!?! would they be so needlessly fucking mean?

OP posts:
CaurnieBred · 18/12/2012 11:48

We used to get paid before Christmas but then they changed it to after Christmas; however, you could go and request an advance - maybe they could do that. To be honest, I preferred the after Christmas as, otherwise, January was a bugger of a month.

But, so not fair of them to do this without plenty of notice to the workforce.

MaxPepsi · 18/12/2012 11:49

I'm guessing the company is actually in more shit than they are letting on.

At least from their own banks point of view.

A lot of companies publish pay dates in advance, did they do this?

sue52 · 18/12/2012 11:50

YANBU. That is shit. Has your DH requested an advance?

minouminou · 18/12/2012 11:52

I'm not mad about this, either, MaxPepsi. The only other realistic explanation is that there's been a major balls-up with payroll and the company is using a "policy change" excuse as it's easier than 'fessing up.

I'm sure your bank will stump up a small overdraft for you.

Have a great Xmas, and let us know what happens.

dreamingbohemian · 18/12/2012 11:53

YANBU, what's wrong with people???

I assume everyone at work is ticked off at this, can your DH organise a letter signed by everybody, not just him? Or at least convince others to complain?

dreamingbohemian · 18/12/2012 11:53

And send letters of complaint as high up the management chain as possible?

Greensleeves · 18/12/2012 11:54

he is emailing the CEO now, but he thinks he will get nowhere.

I hope the company isn't in shit and hiding it Sad they did have a big company meeting a couple of months ago and say everything was going well and they were in profit

rotten bastards

OP posts:
Nancy66 · 18/12/2012 11:55

how many employees does it affect? Can they all band together and go to management and ask that they are paid before Christmas?

shesariver · 18/12/2012 11:56

YANBU at all! No words of comfort but thats really crap, we are exactly the same.

Greensleeves · 18/12/2012 11:56

there is no chance of an overdraft, we have already been refused due to a CCJ (which we have cleared)

we will survive, we're not going to starve at all, we actually have plenty of normal food, and presents. But we have no turkey/alcohol/fruit and veg, that sort of thing, and it is just such a shock and feels so MEAN Sad

OP posts:
RichManPoorManBeggarmanThief · 18/12/2012 11:58

It's not about profitability though- it's about cash flow. I wonder when they're closing their books for the year.

Narked · 18/12/2012 11:59

I'd ask the bank again, specifically for an overdraft that will disappear when the pay comes in and explaining the circumstances. No to an overdraft generally doesn't mean they might not do it under these specific circumstances.
