to be fed up of lollipops and general chewy crap in party bags?

I'm a complete hypocrite, as I'm currently sat here enjoying a massive lollipop from from of said party bags. It' so big that I struggled to get it into my mouth, I kid you not!

But, DS is (just) 3 and in pre-school class at nursery. Since he was in the 2-3 room he's been getting party bags in his pigeon hole pretty regularly. It's very sweet of the parents to do this, I know, but they are full of complete crap. Usually, they contain a couple of Chuppa Chup type-lollipops, chewit-type sweets, and Haribo, along with a balloon, bubbles etc (I have no prons with the toys, I'm not that odd!)

He is my PFB, admittedly, but out of this lot I reluctantly let him have the Haribo and that's it, as all the other stuff just seems completely inappropriate for a toddler. Surely if you're supposed to cut up grapes and cherry tomatoes at this age, then lollipops are not a good idea?!

And in case you're wondering DS had a little pack of choccy biscuits and raisins, alongside the toys, in his birthday party bags, so I'm not an organic-dried-fruit-only type mum, honest!

Just me then? Lollipop is finished now. It was rhubarb and custard flavour, yum!

YANBU. DH loves jelly sweets and lollies and fizzy things. I Little children do not. A bit of chocolate and some cake please! That'll do nicely.

Sirzy · 17/12/2012 22:39

I wouldn't put lollipops or chewy sweets into party bags for that age.

breatheslowly · 17/12/2012 22:39

YANBU - I haven't experienced this, but would be unhappy with more than a bag of buttons or haribo. I find the bubbles in party bags a problem as DD wants to hold them and then spills them down herself and they don't blow very good bubbles either.

McChristmasPants2012 · 17/12/2012 22:40

DD aged 3 only has lollypops if she supervised, she trips alot so i dread her tripping over with a lolly in her mouth.

YANBU, I dislike sweets and lollipops for little toddlers, and I'm not precious about what DD (2) eats at all apart from this. I just think choking hazard and sticky on teeth. Don't mind cake, choc buttons at all

WelshMaenad · 17/12/2012 22:44

Yabu, what the fuck am I to snack on if people stop putting shit in party bags? I'll have to let the little darlings eat it all themselves! Would never do!

thebody · 17/12/2012 22:45

Before you know it its vodka at parties and he will be trying to get his end away.. Enjoy now..

bluebiscuit · 17/12/2012 22:48

Yanbu. My 4yo and 6yo would happily eat tonnes of chocolate, cake and haribo. However, any hard lollipops or boiled sweets or sweets that are very chewy get spat out! (or put in the bin if I get there first). Don't know why anyone likes them, they're gross.

timothyclaypole · 17/12/2012 22:49

They put them in the pigeon holes with stickers on them saying "nursery is not responsible for the contents of this bag". I usually try and sneak them in my pocket before he sees so I can check out the contents and hide as necessary.

A friends DS goes to a different nursery where the party bags are always full of organic dried fruit. Which would be very boring for me Grin

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is not on for a 3yo!

This never happens at DS' nursery either. Children who attend parties get party bags, AT the party. Children who don't go, don't - unless they're a particular special friend and couldn't go for some particular reason. Even then it's done personally, not at nursery.

Sometimes children will bring a big bag of sweeties or lollies or whatever to hand around on their birthday, but the kids get one each, it's hardly an issue to get upset over.

Also am not understanding the party bags at nursery thing....for the kids birthdays?? Party bags are for parties surely

Other than that...if you don't want your dc to have the sweets, then don't give them to him Confused

TraineeBabyCatcher · 17/12/2012 23:36

WelshMaenad has almost word for word said what I was going to.

YABU.

askmeanything · 18/12/2012 03:59

what is the occasion.

Goandplay · 18/12/2012 07:15

When my DS was 3 he nearly choked on a lolly - luckily I he was with me and being supervised.
I still hate him having lollys/boiled sweets - I insist if he does that he cannot suck them in his mouth and only lick the lolly.... He hates getting lollys now because hr knows hr cannot enjoy them because of me. I just can't help it.

timothyclaypole · 18/12/2012 21:20

Dunno why they are in the pigeonholes, I assume it's been a child's birthday. I only give out bags at actual parties. And don't fill them with shite!

WorraLorraTurkey · 18/12/2012 21:22

It can't be every single day though surely?

timothyclaypole · 18/12/2012 21:45

Not everyday, no, but surprisingly often for the amount of children in the class...

Pfft if they're the standards I'm pretty pissed off about painstakingly icing cookies to put in DS' party bags along with really cool mini nerf guns nice toys. Next year the bleeders are getting chuppa chups and haribo, sod it!
