They always have it in things my sister sends over from the US. Is it a big 'thing' then?

Kwanzaa is essentially an American holiday, since it was designed to be an African-American celebration.
It's only been going since the late 60's and isn't really done on a large scale.

MissCellania · 17/12/2012 18:50

oh and yabu, did you mean to put this in Chat?

blameitonthecaffeine · 17/12/2012 19:02

Changeforthrday · 17/12/2012 19:18

never heard of it. what's it for?

SantasBigBaubles · 17/12/2012 19:25

I am a bit suspicions of holidays that have only been around since the 60s.

ll31 · 17/12/2012 19:27

why? every holiday had to start somewhere!

SantasBigBaubles · 17/12/2012 20:26

Yeah I know, it just feels wrong though Hmm. In a couple hundred years am sure my descendants will be all over it though Grin

MissCellania · 17/12/2012 20:44

yeah but most festivals are organic, arising from local tradition, not invented by one man in a university. Just seems a bit artificial.

MmmnoodlesoupIsDueXmasEve · 17/12/2012 20:45

Is it Christmas for African Americans?

MissCellania · 17/12/2012 21:27

Originally it was intended to replace Christmas which was denounced as a white holiday, until the founder realised this was alienating huge numbers of Black christians. So then it was promoted as a separate festival with a different emphasis.

takataka · 17/12/2012 21:29
