To keep my DS off school today

He has had a really high temperature since coming home from school on Friday, but woke up this morning with no temperature, but a bit of a cough and feeling very tired.

This morning he had a hospital appointment quite far away which took the whole morning to get there and back but we got back around dinner. He was tired and cuddly and stressed at the change (autistic)

Also his teacher is pretty much full term pregnant, goes on maternity leave on Friday after working as close to her due date as possible, and I thought seeing as he was still a bit tired, had the end bit of the bug etc and was off in the morning anyway I would just keep him at home, especially since I do not want his teacher to be catching anything so late on in her pregnancy.

Rang school when we got back and explained and they said it was no problem

But a family member rang me to see how DS got on and was a bit funny with me, asking why he wasn't at school now then if he was well and didn't have any more appointments today.

(he is currently asking to go to bed now, this is a child who never usually sleeps at all)

I wasn't being unreasonable was I? He can go back in tomorrow all rested and happy. I am second guessing myself a bit now though, his attendance isn't amazing because of the ridiculous amounts of appointments (never illness, he is very rarely ill) :(

No, he doesn't sound well to me. Better safe than sorry I think!

WelshMaenad · 17/12/2012 15:43

Nope, yanbu.

Dd has CP and I sometimes keep her off if she's really tired/achy. Also if she has really intensive physio i will keep her iff thevrest if the day so she can rest. If they're not in a fit state to learn, what's the point? I think you did the right thing.

I think he's more shattered from having a broken sleep all weekend but he had a high temperature last night.

His little friend has been ill all weekend too. Hope his teacher doesn't catch it :(

It's no-one else's business but I personally wouldn't keep a child off a whole day for 1 appointment.

The teacher being preggers is a bit of a red herring I think. It's her job to teach children in all sorts of moods.

I really wouldn't worry about what anyone else thinks OP.

your family member is being unreasonable! you are his mother and you know what's best for him. YANBU at all. put him to bed and have an evening to yourself.

DozyDuck · 17/12/2012 15:45

Thank you welsh. This was a particularly distressing hospital visit for him as well as he had to have things stuck to his head :(

We've been in all afternoon and the house is still tidy which is almost unheard of for us so he mustn't be feeling 'right'

you were right.
i'm a teacher and i'm off with noro. i'll give it the two days after symptoms before going back because of my colleagues, one is heavily pregnant (mat leave starting friday) one has two small children and a third has one baby fourteen months. its not right to give these people bugs just before christmas.

DozyDuck · 17/12/2012 15:47

I usually wouldn't either Worra, especially since school is the only respite I get... It was a mixture of all the things but now I'm second guessing myself.

Thanks peaceandlove Smile there are also other children at the school with various needs (it's a special school) which makes me over cautious about bugs etc
