Martina Navratilova made a moving speech about female role models so who do they roll out to present it?

Tommy · 16/12/2012 22:42

she is an ambassador for London 2012 I think?

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 16/12/2012 22:43

I said similar to DH earlier. He said she's an ambassador or something. Anyway, she looked nice.

Gubbins · 16/12/2012 22:45

Just what I thought, Nishky. Princess Anne, yes, but not the DoC.

Nishky · 16/12/2012 22:46

She did, but so did Sue Barker who won a grand slam

OP posts:
crypes · 16/12/2012 22:46

My DH said she came running from her sick bed when.she knew David Beckham was there on stage.

Nishky · 16/12/2012 22:48

Gubbind I actually thought it was going to be Princess Anne when they started to announce it - as well as being an Olympian herself she would have seen Seb Coe race

auntmargaret · 16/12/2012 22:48

Does anyone else think that Wiggo's wife was devastated that he didn't thank her in his speech? I thought she looked like she was going to cry.

Celticlassie · 16/12/2012 22:49

I think maybe, for the athletes, having a Royal makes it more special? And she was at a lot of olympic events this summer. She didn't speak though. She NEVER speaks.

TheSkiingGardener · 16/12/2012 22:50

I was glad she made it, and she was an ambassador thingy. Seems a bit of a whine to complain really.

Nishky · 16/12/2012 22:52

Isn't ambassador thingy what sums it up - what has she contributed to sport? 2012 gave us great role models for our daughters and she is not one of them

Bakingnovice · 16/12/2012 22:52

Yanbu. I was shocked to see her there all glammed up. Made a miraculous recovery hasn't she? If she even had HG in the first place. I would have preferred to have seen princess Anne up there. I also thought sen Coe got more praise and airtime than our fantastic sportsmen and women.

SJisontheway · 16/12/2012 22:55

I presumed Wiggos wife was teary with emotion and pride?

PumpkinPositive · 16/12/2012 22:55

For one horrible moment I thought you meant she'd been NOMINATED.

Nishky · 16/12/2012 22:57

Sorry to scare you - how l

DumSpiroSperHoHoHo · 16/12/2012 22:58

My DH said she came running from her sick bed when.she knew David Beckham was there on stage.

But couldn't manage it for Richard Armitage at the Hobbit premiere on Wednesday?

Strange girl! Grin

I don't really see the relevance of her presenting it, but tbh I don't really see the relevance of the royals in 2012 anyway.

Nishky · 16/12/2012 22:58

Oops - meant to say how long before tabloids do an article praising her bravery and dedication

OP posts:
BikeRunSki · 16/12/2012 22:59

I think it was a publicity stunt to show the world that there's nowt wrong with Our Kate. Even though she didn't look like she'd eaten for weeks and did look like she was about to pass out.

Bakingnovice · 16/12/2012 23:00

Forget Kate.
Did anyone see idris Elba??? Highlight of the year for me.

PacificDogwood · 16/12/2012 23:00

Well, she did have an official (representative) function as an ambassador of the Games, so I did not think it was entirely inappropriate.
I thought she looked dreadful under all that slap btw - nice dress though
There were plenty of other female role models there as well

No, I wouldn't say she had no place there. I was surprised to see her as I thought all her public engagements had been cancelled.

CabbageLeaves · 16/12/2012 23:03

Hardly her fault she was invited. Not her fault the media will print a load of bollocks about her bravery.

I didn't think she looked great tbh... however when I had 'just' morning sickness I had greasy hair, grey skin and bags under my eyes so I cannot talk Xmas Grin

BerryChristmas · 16/12/2012 23:04

Oh, you cynical, miserable load of buzzards! She was a Team GB Ambassador - she had every right to be there.

thenightsky · 16/12/2012 23:04

I'd have preferred Princess Anne too, what with her being a real sports person of years gone by.

LeeCoakley · 16/12/2012 23:04

Martina and Sue are good role models for 50-somethings with no (visible) signs of botox/lifts etc. Well done ladies! Martina was my absolute heroine in the 70s and I'm glad she was there tonight.

Would have preferred Anne to Kate but I suppose she was the right choice.

IloveChristmasandsodoesmydog · 16/12/2012 23:08

I also thought Wiggy thanked just about everybody except his wife. I know he's lovely but come on Wiggy.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 16/12/2012 23:08

I didn't get the point of her being there either. YANBU.

However I'm not the royal family's biggest fan.
