My DH is insistant that leftover Chinese is safe from the fridge. I think you need to reheat. Any advice? No plans to feed the DC with it so it's not urgent but I'd like to know! I think he's wrongcand have heard that reheated meat isn't good !

as it stored in the fridge it will be fine it reheat, just make sure it is piping hot.

MrsTomHardy · 16/12/2012 18:54

As long as it reheated so it very hot then it's fine

squeakytoy · 16/12/2012 18:55

my husband and stepdaughter have eaten cold chinese leftovers the following day for as long as I can remember and never been ill.. I always reheat it in the microwave and have never been ill either.

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 16/12/2012 18:55

I always reheat leftovers. three minutes ding.

NettoHoHoHoSuperstar · 16/12/2012 18:57

I never refrigerate or reheat!

WeWilsonAMerryChristmas · 16/12/2012 19:01

Rice should be reheated to piping hot, everything else should be OK cold from the fridge. (Although personally I never eat leftover rice.)

squeakytoy · 16/12/2012 19:05

leftover rice will be fine so long as it has been put in the fridge as quickly as possible... rice salads are always on sale in supermarkets and that is chilled cooked rice!

shuckleberryfinn · 16/12/2012 19:09

Yes but takeaway rice will already have been reheated in the takeaway. They cook it en mass, cool it and reheat it to order. Thrice cooked rice doesn't sound too safe to me.

I don't usually have leftovers as I'm notoriously greedy but on this occasion, i had to leave a substantial portion. After the advice, Im going to eat from the fridge and leave the prawns alone. Cheers guys! :)

We reheat and eat all the time with leftover Chinese food, yum my favorite lunch. No one had died or even got sick in my house from this.

WeWilsonAMerryChristmas · 16/12/2012 19:47

YY shuckle and it sits at room temp in a nice hot box being brought to your house. Lovely. For bugs.

Pleasenomorepeppa · 16/12/2012 19:49

I want a Chinese now Xmas Grin.

Hassled · 16/12/2012 19:51

One of the joys of a Saturday is eating the leftover takeaway from the night before - I've been known to order extra just to accommodate lunch. It'll be fine.

lovelyladuree · 16/12/2012 19:55

I discussed with a catering manager about the amount of pupils who were bringing leftover rice in their packed lunches. She said rice is the absolute worst thing you can save for another day. It just breeds bacteria.

SledsImOn · 16/12/2012 20:01

Erm I think not heating it might be even worse - at least if you nuke it, it might kill some of the bacteria. But apparently the spores that may be in the rice aren't killed by heat anyway/

I'd bin it tbh, but if you're going to eat it, leave out the rice.

peaceandlovebunny · 16/12/2012 20:09

do you like being ill? anything you get from a takeaway should be thrown if not eaten immediately. rice, even cooked at home, should be thrown. you can swiftly chill it, but most people don't have the facilities.

Molecule · 16/12/2012 20:14

The bacteria breeding in rice are not the problem, it's the fact that when warm they break down and release toxins. Therefore piping hot, just cooked rice is OK (no time to break down), piping hot rice quickly cooled is OK (as in an industrial setting, hence supermarket rice salads being OK), but leftover Chinese festering in lukewarm conditions, then put in fridge is really dodgy as it will no doubt have had quite a time for the bacteria to release their toxins.

Reheating it, event to 100 deg C will not get rid of these toxins. I may have got some of my facts wrong, but this was the gist from my food and hygiene certificate a number of years ago. Rice should be binned.
