to think its a bit tight when parents count a school dinner as THE main meal of the day

all other things being equal (money activities etc)

have a colleague who makes her kids have sandwiches for tea " as they eat at school"

they have money, they can cook - is this laziness?
I know they wont starve or out, but I wouldnt count a tiny school meal that is then burned off as a main meal.

USUAL DISCLAIMERS

Yes there are worse things to worry to about
YEs its none of my business
Yes I am judging

On phone with predictive text so some words come out funny Aldo sick dd upstairs.

I always give mine the choice and sandwiches are what they ask for. It usually a sandwich or wrap with French fries or Doritos. Sliced cucumber & carrot sticks. Followed by yoghurt maybe.

Arithmeticulous · 16/12/2012 12:58

Can't have Cook for lunch and Cook for tea

I pay for school dinners so that when I can't be arsed on the days we are driving back and forth to various clubs and all the kids have time for is cereal sandwiches, that I know they've had a cooked meal.

MariahScarey · 16/12/2012 12:58

Lol at doritos being a new food group. Grin

I would have two hot meals every day if I could.

Narked · 16/12/2012 12:58

Except for SoleSource's DS who burns calories like an Olympic rower Shock Grin

TrillsCarolsOutOfTune · 16/12/2012 12:59

OK maybe not Christmas Day. Lots of days though.

kinkyfuckery · 16/12/2012 13:00

Some kids don't eat more than one 'big meal' per day. It'd be a bit of a waste to be cooking one that wouldn't be eaten.

SoleSource · 16/12/2012 13:00

Lol Narked he dors!! Lol

SoleSource · 16/12/2012 13:00

I have aphoto of my DS on my profile as proof lol

Narked · 16/12/2012 13:01

And sandwiches can be higher in calories and nutrition that hot food. A peanut butter sandwich with carrot sticks and a yoghurt has a lot more to it than pasta with a tomato sauce.

Narked · 16/12/2012 13:02

So he does sit still sometimes Grin

SoleSource · 16/12/2012 13:03

Lol Narked Ihad to ask him to sit still !

Mine have hot lunch at school but I'm never convinced how much they eat so cook most nights too.

My eldest would love to have a sandwich in the evening though his preferred method of eating is big breakfast, reasonable lunch and small supper.

McChristmasPants2012 · 16/12/2012 13:04

I can go days without cooking, ds has school meals which are big so he doesn't want much tea time. Dd has a cooked lunch before nursery (while I am in work) so she also don't want much tea time.

In work I grab a sandwich, but for tea I am more than happy with soup ( I really don't eat much) I mean I haven't even eaten today.

Before school it's cereal, toast and fruit.

SoleSource · 16/12/2012 13:04

Lmao

naughtymummy · 16/12/2012 13:04

No not tight very sensible. On Tuesdays Dshas ruby till 7. He has a hot lunch then we all have veg soup (prepared earlier) bread and cheese. I am mystified as to what is wrong with this.

MariahScarey · 16/12/2012 13:06

lol at campbell

You wait. My giant teen has school dinner a snack at 4.30, tea then his "Cheerios" course at about 10 pm

FreudiansSlipper · 16/12/2012 13:06

I thought eating your main meal at lucnch time is better for you

Ds has a cooked lunch at school sometimes he has pasta or soup at home often just wants toast with picky bits and yogurt sometimes beans with garlic bread that's a favourite :)

suits us I am fine with being called lazy

EndoplasmicReticulum · 16/12/2012 13:07

I often have school dinner and then a hot meal in the evening. I don't understand this idea that one meal a day must be sandwiches and one something hot. Sometimes in the summer we have 2 cold meals.

MariahScarey · 16/12/2012 13:08

just asked son what he would think to a sandwich for tea.

HE is thinking Man vs food types ones.

sheesh

It all depends on the quality and portion size of the school lunch, surely? At my dcs primary school they got really good, cooked in the school kitchen lunches. Big portions plus proper puddings with custard and stuff. When they came home after school they had a drink and a biscuit/piece of home made cake. By teatime, which was pretty early, they'd never have eaten another big meal. So they had what my mother used to call "high tea" - poached eggs on toast (or similar), yoghourt, bread and butter, more cake.

At secondary school the lunches were much smaller and based around pizza and chips mainly without much in the way or puddings. So they took a packed lunch and then had a proper meal in the evening.

Despite both of them having healthy appetites and lots of activities, they never came close to starving or being under-nourished on a shocking regime of one main, cooked meal a day.

I don't think there's an absolute right or wrong here so I suspect YABU in condemning your colleague without knowing very much more than you probably need to know about her child's eating habits.

LadyBeagleBaublesandBells · 16/12/2012 13:10

I've only ever had one hot meal a day, always in the evening.
If I have a lunch I'm full at teatime.
Ds is at High School now, but since primary school he always had school dinners, and was still hungry in the evening so I still cook most nights, though he is old enough to make something for himself if I CBA.
Teenagers are bottomless pits though.

MariahScarey · 16/12/2012 13:11

lol at "condemning"
of course i dont know much! do you expect me to go around with a clipboard saying " I am about to start a thread on mn , i need ALL THE FACTS first"

DS aged 6 won't eat a cooked meal at teatime if he has had a cooked lunch. He will only eat one cooked meal a day. So yes YABU in my view! He has school dinners on days we have activities after school and when he is in after school club on the days I work. Then he had sandwiches for tea. Not tight at all. Just common sense and practical for our family.

DD on the other hand won't eat sandwiches. So she has hot food twice a day. Often only beans on toast or eggs and spaghetti for the other meal tho.
