To ask how much you pay for your office Christmas party (if you have one)

Meikyo · 14/12/2012 16:52

My work Christmas party is tonight but I decided when it was announced in September not to go as I think it is too expensive. Party is a meal and disco at a museum venue (ie not a fancy restaurant) and is £75 per head - includes 2 drinks vouchers. I reckoned that with taxis to and from venue (even sharing) and a couple of additional drinks then cost would be over £100. Organisation is publicly funded so no contribution from company - whole cost to be paid by staff which is fair enough. However, out of a total staff of 25, 10 are not going...not sure if down to cost. I would rather spend the money on presents for my family instead. What does your office party cost you?

I though ours was on the pricey side! We are in central belt of Scotland so not London prices either. Last year was a restaurant and was about £35 plus drinks so not too bad. Previously we went for a lunch at a college with a catering school - lovely three course meal for about £15 byob for drinks.

One of managers was so annoyed at the price of this year's do that he paid £50 each out of his own pocket for the 2 junior staff on lower wages to go tonight.

I've never paid for a work's Christmas party, although they're never party-parties iyswim

I'm going out on mine tonight - dinner and drinks at a local restaurant, on my company.

When I worked fulltime in London, we had some pretty swanky nights out that we didn't have to pay a penny for, other than cab/train home

freddiefrog · 14/12/2012 18:39

Oh, and if I had to pay £75 to go, I wouldn't bother. I like my colleagues, but I don't like them £75 worth

almapudden · 14/12/2012 18:48

Mine is paid for fully by my employers. Unlimited booze!

CleanHankie · 14/12/2012 18:50

Ours was held in the Student Bar (work at a Uni), £13 for a 3 course meal and then drinks, which were cheaper than normal thanks to where we were Xmas Grin. Couple of quid for public transport home.

Nothing! Company paid part of it, and, although she didn't say so explicitly, I'm pretty sure the boss picked up part of the cost as well. It was a meal and drinks.

flow4 · 14/12/2012 18:55

Mine will be about £15-20 plus taxis. I wouldn't go if it were more; I hesitate even at this cost, since I don't get many nights out and would probably sooner spend it with friends!

I work in the public sector. Everyone has had a wage freeze and many fear for their jobs. So lots of people are being a bit careful with their money this year.

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 14/12/2012 18:56

I'm in two teams at work
team one is £15 for a light lunch, then whatever we drink in the pub after,
team two is pub then turkish - about £50 in total
NHS so (quite rightly) out of my own pocket

MrsBW · 14/12/2012 18:59

That's crazy.

We paid £10 (£20 for partners) and that got us a private room and bar, 3 course meal, disco and alcohol until 11pm when the tab ran out.

Company subsidised it pretty heavily.

OhDearNigel · 14/12/2012 19:03

blimey Shock. £20 pub meal

Chelvis · 14/12/2012 19:03

DH's is £20 for the meal (Chinese Banquet) and apparently another £20 for drinks, seeing as he's just pilfered that off the mantlepiece ... that was my secret SAHM-takeaway-on-my-lonesome Christmas-do tonight, grr!

Oreocrumbs · 14/12/2012 19:03

We pay for our staff's christmas party! Well the meal and drinks, they are on their own if they hit the town after though!

I know how much they can put away Xmas Wink

ENormaSnob · 14/12/2012 19:14

Ours (nhs) was £45 this year for a meal and disco. Drinks and taxis take the cost well over £100. Paid in full by ourselves.

I didn't go as was away.

catgirl1976geesealaying · 14/12/2012 19:18

Ours is fully paid for by the bosses

£75 is a lot. I wouldn't pay it

WitchOfEndor · 14/12/2012 19:20

Nothing, we just turn up and they practically throw the booze at us!

MamaChocoholic · 14/12/2012 19:26

At my old place it used to be a meal out, about 40 quid, but alcohol free, which always struck me as discriminatory against those who didn't drink.

New place, it's all free. Am lucky to have a generous boss. I bought my team some chocolate and mince pies, couldn't stretch to a four course meal!

F0xyLady · 14/12/2012 19:39

We had a meal out at lovely restaurant, it was £25 a head for 3 courses. Most of us stayed out in town afterwards, and I probably spend about £30 on taxis and drinks on top of this.

MammaTJ · 14/12/2012 19:54

Not an office party, we don't all get to sit on our bums for a living Wink, but work party. We meet at our place of work, a residential home for the elderly. We have a drink with the residents, so they can see us all dressed up and have a bit of a laugh with us.

Then we go to a restaurant of the bosses choosing, where they pay for a meal and copious amounts of Wine. Then we go on to a pub where the boss continues to buy us booze. Then, somewhere aroud 11, the bosses (a married couple) bos out and leave us to it, then we actually buy our own drinks.

I had had 7 hours sleep over four days when ours happened last week, so bowed out after one drink in the pub. Such a shame.

MammaTJ · 14/12/2012 19:54

bow out*

Chubfuddler · 14/12/2012 19:57

Nothing at all. On paper work pay for the food and we are supposed to pay for drinks, in practice one of the partners sticks their card behind the bar and that's that.

OohMrDarcy · 14/12/2012 20:04

Nothing

Work books one of the big multi company party venues you get around - around £40 a ticket (they pay ) including 5 course meal / entertainment / wine with dinner then company normally (though not always) pay for drinks wristbands for everyone too - normally a similar price to the ticket, and taxi's / hotels are claimed back on expenses - they don't pay great but they do make up for it with the christmas do!

ihearsounds · 14/12/2012 20:05

Cost a glass of wine Wink
Whichever company I have worked for as always stumped up the majority - entertainment, meal and drinks. Some have limits on drink such as current which was a 3 course meal and 2 glasses of wine or equivalent cost of another drink.

QODRestYeMerryGentlemen · 14/12/2012 20:35

We used to get a £20 a head voucher we could use against a local pre arranged Xmas do, we have several function halls locally.

That's been the plan for the last 4 yrs I think. Prior to that the company totally funded and had ice rinks, sweetie tents, famous singers, bucking bronchos etc etc.

This year it reverted to company paid.

I don't think we'll have another co Xmas party again (someone died last night :( - cant give any details I'm afraid.)

Whatever your company do, keep safe and enjoy.

AuntLucyInTheNorthPole · 14/12/2012 20:37

We own the company, and pay for everything. Swanky place, too :-)
