To Think Nursery are taking the piss

Ok first post in AIBU .

My son started Nursery at the beginning of October and a few days before he started i ordered 1 school jumper before purchasing all the uniform to check sizes etc, after constant letters from them asking when i would be purchasing the correct uniform for him after giving in and placing another order for the whole of the school uniform (£160) at the beginning of November and have only received the school pe kit (tracksuit) which was the wrong size age 10 instead of age 4 so had to return that and have still not got anything else from the order .
It is a Prep School my son attends & a very small one at that and they have to have the uniform made to order.
I have asked several times how much longer i am going to have to wait (im not the only parent waiting , Some are still waiting for items ordered in the 6 weeks holidays) and we have been told that they have swapped companies but because they had already paid the first company we have to wait for them to send our orders which does not look likely to happen anytime soon.
Are they taking the piss and should i ask for my money back or would i be unreasonable to ask that of them ??

(have fainted with shock at the £160 school uniform for nursery).

It sounds like it's the uniform providing company that is the problem. Will school give you the details so that you can contact them direct? I think it would be perfectly reasonable to ask for your money back(and assuming your child is going to Reception at this school buy the uniform in a size up with the other company). Did they give you a delivery time when you ordered it?

OhFuckaDuck · 14/12/2012 15:05

I only found out about the price of uniform after enrolling my son Xmas Hmm
Will ask for the companies details for the uniform & see if I can contact them , Thanks as I never thought of chasing it up myself

This is exactly why I refused to send ds2 to a nursery attached to a prep school. The very idea of 3 year olds having to wear caps, blazers and other nonsensical items of uniform that could only be bought from a designated uniform supplier seemed bonkers.

In your case, I really think you are entitled to your money back. £160 is a ludicrous amount anyway.

superpushymum · 14/12/2012 16:21

Do you have a second hand uniform sale at your school? I get blazers for a tenner instead of 95 pounds and coats are 15 instead of 125.

OhFuckaDuck · 14/12/2012 18:09

Unsure of the second hand uniform sale though I very much doubt it , tried ringing for the suppliers number but they must of all legged it out of school soon as they finished for the holidays .
Will have to wait for them to reopen in January and tackle them then.
The price was for 2 jumpers , 1 tie, book bag, or kit & or tshirt all ridiculously over priced but have to be made to order due to them being a small school

Oh my very good god!!??? Sorry we must live on different stratospheres to consider spending that on a nursery uniform??!!

It will get covered in paint, playdough and god knows what!
Guess this is what you have to do to get your child in the best school? (genuine question, not being funny) Is that why you chose that nursery?

kinkyfuckery · 14/12/2012 18:16

WTAF?

What are you (and other parents) sending children in just now?

exoticfruits · 14/12/2012 18:18

a- uniform for nursery is ridiculous.
b-it should be cheap, tough and washable.

all ridiculously over priced but have to be made to order due to them being a small school

They could just do without or settle for something you could get in a chain store.

WhoPutTheDickOnTheSnowman · 14/12/2012 18:44

Surely if they insist ther has to e a uniform (which as mentioned I think is ridiculous) then the better way to go about it would be to offer either an embroidery service or send appliques home? That way parents save money by buying uniform elsewhere (there are only so many colours tbf) and the school gets it's logo emblazoned on every child as per.
Or just sell the blazers and caps? PE kit etc is pe kit - it certainly was no different at the Schools I went to which were Public and state. I'd give them the 2 fingers and get my money back. Grey trousers are grey trousers frankly. Also...it's nursery.

OhFuckaDuck · 14/12/2012 18:48

My son has just been wearing a shirt & tie & I had to purchase another track suit for pe twice a week.
I have started to send my son in a thick grey cardi with it been so cold .
I didn't send him just because it was a prep school, I tried him in main stream nursery (which also has a uniform) but he just didn't settle properly because of his aspergers , He has settled really well at his new nursery because there is a lot more structure/set timetable

I'd wonder if the company making them are going under? You can view company books online I believe.

Some private schools do a 2nd hand uniform sale?

Why would anyone think it a good idea to put toddlers/v young children in ties?

It all seems so stupid!

Their weird attitude to clothes would have me grabbing my DC and running for the hills tbh

exoticfruits · 14/12/2012 19:17

I hate seeing the poor little things in shirts and ties-it just isn't appropriate.

exoticfruits · 14/12/2012 19:19

It would be a good time, with the present difficulties, to get together with other parents and suggest something cheap and simple.

MustTidyPlayroom · 14/12/2012 19:21

I think you are right to moan about the non-delivery, but the costs seems pretty reasonable; it costs a £80 for a nursery duffel coat where we are and it's a similar price for the blazer - at least I can hand down and we have second hand uniform shop (seems to be better for the girls though).

Pixel · 14/12/2012 19:39

Yes my friend paid over £200 for her ds's nursery uniform and that was ten years ago. He was only 2 yo and had to wear long-sleeved shirt, jumper, blazer, tie, cap, shorts, socks with little tassels. And they weren't allowed to wear long trousers even with snow on the ground so there was a sort of tracksuit affair that went over the whole outfit for playtime! They had a PE kit but had to buy an extra 'special' PE kit for sports day Confused.

Principality · 14/12/2012 19:52

I feel for you op. But really see if parents or the school can organise a second hand uniform shop.

Ds' prep school runs one per month and all of ds2s nursery uniform and most of ds1 uniform came from there. I saved a fortune! Eg new school jumper £29 or £4 in the second hand shop. Nursery polo tops £15 new or £2 second hand!

superpushymum · 14/12/2012 20:12

Alien, I was thinking same as you but my kids always come back spotless. Not sure how they manage to keep them clean, they are both very messy.

MustTidyPlayroom · 14/12/2012 20:56

Mine generally stay fairly clean too, which amazes me as they are grubby within minutes of getting home! The almost floor length painting overalls probably help!!

Tryharder · 14/12/2012 21:00

The ridiculously overpriced uniform is clearly a way of sorting out the wheat from the chaff/ sheep from the goats etc. If you can't afford it, you are clearly In The Wrong School.

MustTidyPlayroom · 14/12/2012 21:08

I don't the the OP said she couldn't afford it - she is just quite rightly annoyed at not receiving the uniform she has paid for.

OhFuckaDuck · 14/12/2012 21:19

I never said I couldn't afford it & as for separating the 'chaff/sheep' I certainly am neither of these .

OP posts:
AlienRefucksLooksLikeSnow · 15/12/2012 19:01

Well, I'm flabbergasted! I honestly never knew some nursery kids wore shirt and tie?!! Seems ridiculous to me, but there you go!
