A couple of local mums set up a Lego club in the area for children with special needs. They used their own money to set it up and since then have raised a lot more through local charities.

Its a wonderful place where all children, regardless of the severity of their needs can go and play and spend time in a non-judgemental environment and where parents can go and it doens't matter if its their kid throwing the lego about or chewing it.

Yesterday some new people turned up, pretending to be a potential family who were interested in bringing their child. They were actually just there to steal and stole money and cards from one of the women who organises the group, before disappearing.

IMO, that makes you an utter, utter cunt and I hope they are caught. Bastards.

If it's in the press, someone might come forward, having seen the utter shower of bastards.

That's just hideously awful. What dreadful human beings. I would agree that a warning in a local paper would help other groups not fall victim to these people.

I know you didn't start the thread looking for donations/support but honestly, it sounds like an amazing thing and the sort of enterprise a log of people would love to support but don't ever hear about. I'm off out to buy my son his first Duplo shortly (pretty sure getting to play with Lego was one of my reasons for wanting to be a parent) and I'd love to buy some Lego for the club. So if you change your mind, PM me your details.

Someone has just sent me a link to this story HERE in Liverpool. It puts what happened at our club into perspective.

I know Christmas is a hard time and that people struggle financially, but I just can't see any justification for these kinds of acts.

It's not just the stealing, it's the fact that they stole from kids, and pretended their own kid had SN in order to access the club. It's just vile.

I am in Liverpool and everywhere has had to be tight on all security, including the storage of bags, for a long time.

Landlords won't put boilers, light fittings, into houses until the day that tenants are moving in.

These people are usually "professional" and are not just desperate.

You would be surpriced at the amount of people who think that anything or anyone who isn't security conscious is fair game.

That is truly appalling and I am very sorry it has happened. After the initial upset has died down a little, perhaps it would be a good idea to review security and vetting procedures. For example, if these people were pretending to have a SN child but didn't, it doesn't make sense that one or both of them was allowed to wander about unsupervised even for a moment. A lot of preschools won't allow anyone to look round who doesn't have their child with them too. It is a child protection issue as much as a theft risk. And the fact is, anyone can be a thief, even a bona fide parent of a child with SN. If you need to leave your bag unsupervised for a moment as a leader, you really need a locker.
