to accept a present of foie gras

Toadinthehole · 14/12/2012 05:15

...leastways I assume it's for me. I found it by accident, it is my birthday in a few days' time, and I like foody things.

I don't eat foie gras because I think force-feeding geese is cruel. I have mentioned this to my DW. I suspect she has forgotten about this, and accordingly forgotten that I don't eat foie gras.

AIBU to smile and accept the gift and "forget" to mention my reservations until perhaps a few months later? After all, the stuff has been bought now.

I feel that way about Tofu!

pictish · 14/12/2012 09:51

XiCi - your post is succinct, and I would have to say that on the whole, I agree with you.
I think anyone can take a stand and be vegan if they want...I respect that choice...but it's not cool to shout in my face about it, call me stupid and label other people as cruel and greedy, because we don't follow suit. That's socially inept and childish.

You don't get to decide what our priorities should be, little girl.
There is endless suffering, injustice, torture and violence amongst our fellow humans. You decide what you care about, and I'll do the same.
Don't you dare get all up in people's faces about your pet project. You're not educating anyone, you're just making sure you are written off at the first approach. The cause won't thank you for that.

takataka · 14/12/2012 09:55

yes tofu is rank

pictish · 14/12/2012 09:56

And tofu is horrendous.

bradywasmyfavouritewiseman · 14/12/2012 09:56

interesting article

TeeElfOnTeeShelf · 14/12/2012 10:00

"TeeElf, you just sound dumb I'm afraid....animals aren't dumb at all, as you would discover if you bothered to educate yourself. Easier just to remain ignorant and stuff their rotting flesh in their mouth, though, eh?"

Absofuckinglutely.

Is that wrong?

The dumb ones are actually the people on here bleating on while wearing their high street fashion and leather shoes. Where were your ethics then? You think not shopping at Primark let's you out? You're wrong. And in that case I'm talking about human working conditions which are 1,000,000 times more important than some stupid goose.

TeeElfOnTeeShelf · 14/12/2012 10:02

Also, linking to PETA loses the agreement immediately, whomever that was.

Read up on their real practices some time.

NolittleBuddahsorTigerMomshere · 14/12/2012 10:03

Feed it to your cat/ dog

theplodder · 14/12/2012 10:05

Well, demand for foie gras is through the roof this year, despite the cat calls of the activists about cruelty.

Animals serve us. Domestic animals are controlled for our pleasure and whims. They do not have feelings and we kill millions upon millions every day for meat, we control their breeding cycles, we bring them into the world then destroy them as we see fit , we genetically engineer them , we grind them up to make all sorts of products. We are God.

Picking one little thing like foie gras is just a silly sideshow for middle class activists to get het up about. Yet the same people will surely use an animal's skin for their handbag, sofa, shoe, car seat. They will drink milk every day from cows that are permanently pregnant and whose male calves are usually killed at 8 days old as a by product of milk production.

Billions of chicken chicks are gassed to death every year in pursuit of the eggs on your table and the chicken you ate in the restaurant last night.

People are such hypocrites. Get over it. They're just animals.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 14/12/2012 10:09

I eat meat, but wouldn't eat foie gras. I don't eat any offal or things made from offal, though. Animal welfare matters to me enormously, but I accept I'm a hypocrite. As is eveyone on some level. I buy free range meat and make the choices I can live with.

LeBFG · 14/12/2012 10:13

Yes, I was going to mention this Spanish foie gras. As I said earlier, ducks truely are greedy beggars. They self-stuff given half a chance as my figs can attest to. The French insist it isn't 'proper' foie gras...but I think it's a nice idea. Never seen any for sale though. Apparently duck/goose stuffing goes right back to the Egyptians where they indeed stuffed them with figs.

TeeElfOnTeeShelf · 14/12/2012 10:13

What theplodder said.

::applause::

takataka · 14/12/2012 10:23

I was vegan for 10 years. I stopped being vegan when I moved to a country where there is no intensive farming. And became more concerned with the appalling treatment of people.

I cant not care about animal welfare, but I think there is no hope when people can treat other people so mercilessly

Im not sure the Emmanuel Cant quote is accurate, something along the lines of

'you can judge the heart of society/a person by the treatment of animals'

I think it was probably original 'the most disadvantaged members [of society]'

and I believe that to be true

I'd heard it as 'you may judge a country by the way it treats its most vulnerable'

Yup.

slatternlymother · 14/12/2012 10:31

Sorry, but I don't understand what foie gras is. Can someone please explain?

pictish · 14/12/2012 10:31

Goose liver pate.

theplodder · 14/12/2012 10:33

A delicious treat! Nom Nom!

LeBFG · 14/12/2012 10:34

or duck liver as it mainly is today

slatternlymother · 14/12/2012 10:35

So if it's just liver pâté then that's fine isn't it? Surely force feeding just means putting loads of food in front of them and they'll eat it, because they're animals? Like putting loads of chocolate in front of a greedy me person.

cuillereasoupe · 14/12/2012 10:38

who can shout the loudest about enjoying animal cruelty

or being against it.

Can someone explain how the making of foie gras is any worse than battery chickens?

This is where the animal cruelty argument fails for me. I don't like foie gras should would buy it ethical or other wise. But the people shouting about it being cruel vary rarely seem to be vegan. Or they are the 'we buy ethically when I can get it or afford it'.

To me you are either against the whole practice of animals being kept in poor conditions to be used by humans or you are not.

Its not a budget or availability issue. If you are against animals being kept in poor conditions, you wouldn't buy anything unethical and would go with out if you could not source it or afford it.
