...watching some american food show.
the amount of meat they put into their dishes is staggering.
makes me feel slightly sick...

My OH is a big meat-eater, I think he could live quite happily without a veg in sight, apart from chips with his steak that is..

I watched some american food show called diners and something, and what struck me was how they don't use any fresh ingredients - pretty much all the dishes used "dehydrated onion".., I mean what is that about?? Confused:

squeakytoy · 13/12/2012 22:59

a bit of generalising there OP.. not ALL americans put lots of meat onto their dishes.. (unless you are watching Man Vs Food which is specifically about eating as much of it as possible!)..

And they do use a lot of fresh ingredients, again it depends on which part of the USA you are in..

CaliforniaSucksSnowballs · 13/12/2012 23:15

Oh I don't know, when I go on holiday here in the US for any length of time and eat out (a lot) I know I'm craving fresh veggies before it's time to go home.
I went away for two nights in October and searched the menus for things with veggies in, just a serving of green beans of broccoli would have been nice, but you do get a lot of meat and chips, or mashed potatoes and a desert spoon of veg.

MrsTerrysChocolateOrange · 13/12/2012 23:19

Diners, Drive-ins and Dives? Because that program is not about gourmet food! Americans do eat a lot of meat, though. Not all of them but per capita, it is very high.

bacon explosion

:o I have actually made this.I had to just to see.Its really delicious but totally too much

Then theres the pork fatty

Made that too

TinyDancingHoofer · 14/12/2012 00:57

How have i never heard of a pork fatty. They look amazing Xmas Grin

BertieBotts · 14/12/2012 01:03

I have nothing to add, but your thread title reminds me of a jingle they play on our local radio station which DS (4) has adopted as his own.

It goes: (In a low, manly voice, obviously)

Meat meat meat meat
Meat meat meat meat
Meat meat meat meat
Wholesale meats!

DS thinks it says "We all sell meats!" and regularly substitutes random words in place of "meat". He puts the voice on as well - that's the best bit Grin

Just thought I'd share that with you.

BertieBotts · 14/12/2012 01:06

Is the pork fatty a giant pig in blanket? That sounds awesome Grin

I want a bacon explosion too :(

Morloth · 14/12/2012 02:45

We eat lots of meat.

I like it.

Am not even the tiniest bit sorry. Grin

MousyMouse · 14/12/2012 09:00

yep it was diners drive ins...
I was astounded at the amount of meat they use. they put a layer of processed meat in a sandwich and I think yum. then they pile on another 3 layers or so and I think wtf.
and agree about the amount of processed ingredients.

I know that many americans live healthily and [gasp] cook from scratch.

...and they serve burgers (as in minced meat) pink. Envy

TinyDancingHoofer · 14/12/2012 23:16

Proper burgers can be pink. They are yummy. There's a big hoo-ha in london at the mo as the council is trying to ban rare burgers even when customers request them. Lots of posh burger chefs are raging.

Morloth · 14/12/2012 23:28

Mince is fine pink, it is all to do with how fresh it is.

Also people are too afraid of food these days.

Humans are surprisingly hard to kill.

BunnyLebowski · 14/12/2012 23:30

There's no such thing as too much meat. Good meat that is.

And burgers should be pink.

Don't even start me on people who order steak anything more cooked than medium-rare Hmm

MerryChristMoose · 14/12/2012 23:35

They like a good cow or two here in Canada. The beef quality is amazing though. Our local restaurants do tend to offer veggies as a side. It's usually garlic mash, loaded potato or fries with your slab of cow.

Theicingontop · 14/12/2012 23:36

Baconstripsandbaconstrips.

I can't eat meat more than twice a week without feeling greasy. I unintentionally lived as a vegetarian before meeting OH, didn't feel the need for it. It was all downhill from there. What is it with men and meat anyway?

Americans DO eat a lot of meat though. I read an article comparing the average meat consumption around the world, and America was right up there, Japan being one of the lowest. Interesting stuff.

DorsetKnobwithJingleBellsOn · 14/12/2012 23:40

I watch Diners etc sometimes and have yet to see prcessed food, I have seen them make their own stuff but not pre packed stuff.

MousyMouse · 15/12/2012 10:00

they seem to 'process' everything themselves. not just cook, it's cured then cooked then deep fried at the very least (or so it seems).
many of the spices though are dehydrated or granulated and hardly a veg in sight (apart from a slice of giant tomatoes).

OP posts:
PessaryPam · 15/12/2012 10:05

Is this 'Hate Americans' day or something?

MousyMouse · 15/12/2012 10:14

no. I love american, have family there, have lived there myself.
love some of the food, my aunt makes the most amazing beans and other foods herself.
and I realise that these shows show an extreme

OP posts:
Theicingontop · 15/12/2012 10:28

It's not hating Americans to say they don't eat well as a nation. That's a fact. Just like it is here.

SantaisBarredfromhavingStella · 15/12/2012 11:39

Mmmmmmm, Man Vs Food makes me soooo hungry!! We are a meat loving house, completely unashamed by this-meat, meat & more meat-think we'd fit right in over in the states Grin

Alisvolatpropiis · 15/12/2012 12:40

I'm not sold on the idea that Americans don't eat/serve fresh vegetables. When in America I've noticed the vast array of veg for sale in their supermarkets and that veg is always an option to have with your meal in a restaurant as in "served with x veg/fries/baked potato".

And I've always felt more inclined to eat healthily in the hotter states because it's so hot so have never come home worried I'm going to get scurvy.

quirrelquarrel · 15/12/2012 13:05

As a veggie this thread disgusts me haha, but can't you get everything in America, including great salads? I thought everything was big and with lots of ingredients....

Kalisi · 15/12/2012 13:09

Mmmmm Man vs Food makes me salivate.
