to let the cat in?

I'm fine with being unreasonable on this, but please tell me the cat will be ok overnight if it's a stray.

There's a cat outside meowing to get in. I had let it in earlier - thought it was another cat that visits all the houses around here. That one comes, hangs out and leaves, we don't feed it, the owner is fine with it. Anyway, this cat is not that one. It's thin and now, after checking with my neighbour that it's not hers, I put it back out. The cat is very affectionate, so it must belong to someone?

Would I be unreasonable letting it in? It'll be fine if I don't, right? It's just that it's sitting outside the window, meowing so pitifully....

Ooh I love ginger toms, such a pretty cat. I bet he fills out and goes all cobby looking.

He's probably trying to work out how to shut the laptop off so he can get back to human training.

You don't need a cat flap, in fact they often cause more problems than they cure - cats can intrude and resident cats can feel insecure and start to mark their territory - your house! Growing up, we just let the cat in/out the front door - he would often come to the window by the lounge to let us know he wanted in!

larry, wow! You guys are lovely to have your cat and she's extremely lucky to have you.

This one has been good so far, except for jumping up on counters and the table, and hasn't destroyed anything (yet). He's completely uninterested in the litter box but does go outside. I'm not sure how competent a cat he is - he was stick thin when he came in. I'll definitely keep an eye on his food intake though - it might change in the warmer months when there are more small yummy animals around.

I'm still not convinced his owner isn't going to show up and whisk him away. For the time being, we're enjoying having him here.

Wow, just goes to show that I have tabs open for a while. Crossposted with loads.

He meows at the back to get in, so we're letting him in that way. I'm not sure what we're going to do about cat flaps if he stays, maybe one of those that opens with the chip? That's a few weeks away though.

He is mumsnetting! And he also has sat on the keyboard, trying to google something, although I'm not quite sure what he was going for, he doesn't seem to be able to spell.

Thanks for all the kind words and help.
