To use Workfare...

Just that.
I don't like it, I don't agree at all, I'm on benefits myself........
My support worker has said that I need to accept help.

To be clear, what is/should/might happen is decorating, which will be done by the equivalent of workfare.

Someone will be doing decorating for you on a voluntary or apprenticeship basis? If they're OK about doing it I don't know why you wouldn't be. If they're not OK about doing it, and are doing it under duress (l
Threat of losing benefits etc) then I guess you have to decide (1) whether they would just be doing it elsewhere if you said no, and (2) how badly you need your decorating done.

expatinscotland · 13/12/2012 00:01

Oh, it's not voluntary. It's people on JSA. Hmm. The thing I'd worry about it that they might not give a toss and get paint everywhere.

TwistedTinsel · 13/12/2012 00:12

I'd be worried about the paint too, that's not me judging people forced onto workfare that's based on the numpties that my workplace employed as part of work fares predecessor (future jobs, new deal one of those).I wouldn't have trusted half if them to open a carrier bag the right way up never mind hold a paintbrush. I'm not commenting on anything else because i've seen how that can go on here.

TwistedTinsel · 13/12/2012 00:19

Sorry for the ranting hijack op. I've just reread that and i'm sorry i posted it. My bias against back to work schemes has a lot to do with my employer being a plonker. Obviously i have some first hand experience of what those individuals on back to work scheme were like to work with but perhaps given more training and support it could have been different. I would definitely question their training and skills. If they have no training you'd be as well doing it yourself.

wannabedomesticgoddess · 13/12/2012 00:25

If you were a business that was profiting from Workfare, I would say YABU and have a mini rant at you.

But you arent. And I think YANBU because the person who does the decorating is going to do their placement regardless of how you feel about it. If you need the help then take it. This government wont change its mind because Netto refused the help. But the help might just change your life in a small way for the better!

:)

I hate workfare but if we have to have it at all, I'd rather they worked to help people in genuine need than as free labour for tesco or somewhere similar. I understand your uneasiness though. How much does the work need doing?

FlourFace · 13/12/2012 00:44

YABU.

NettoHoHoHoSuperstar · 13/12/2012 08:38

It really needs doing, it's my new flat which has been rewired leaving all the walls and ceilings a mess, they need stripping, lining paper on the walls and painting. It's a big job which I just can't afford to pay to have done, not all of it anyway.
I do feel really uneasy about it, but according to the woman who helps me, these people are working anyway, mainly outside litter picking and such, and would rather be inside.
I do make a pretty good cuppa/bacon sarnie/chocolate fudge cake if that helps?

I think you'll find they'll try really hard because it's your personal house and not some big, faceless building. They may not know how to paint (so few people do these days) so you may find yourself having to give them tips if you can paint yourself, but try they will. Bacon sarnies will help of course!
