AIBU to expect cleaner to change hoover bag?

Cutiecat · 12/12/2012 17:56

I have had this cleaner for 6 months and have in the past I have changed the bag inbetween visits but on a couple of occasions it has been full when she is here. When this has happened she has asked me to change it, which I have done and I have showed her how to do it. Yesterday I was in the middle of working (I work from home) and she came and asked me to do it. I asked in a cheery voice, that the bags were in the cupboard and could she do it. She did not reply and then went shortly after. I just go the hoover out to hoover up asmashed bauble (I know, why did I let DD aged 1 help decorate the tree) and bag was full to bursting. AIBU to think this is part of the job?

Mine empties the hoover and even washes the filters - I have never asked, she does did it. But we have had some other difficulties and her grasp of English is very poor hence I have had to let some things go as they became too difficult to explain! But I like her and she works hard and does most things well - I guess it depends whether your cleaner is usually good/hardworking and reasonable - sometimes if it is just one small thing it is not worth making a fuss. Is her English good?

elfbambinos · 12/12/2012 18:47

how much do you pay her?

I'm only asking might it might be you are under paying and your cleaner is taking a 'no' I'm doing doing that stance because you are perhaps 'wanting extras'

I'm sure it would not break your fingernails to empty the hoover bag

Cutiecat · 12/12/2012 18:51

Hoover is not a dyson, it is a straightforward bag that is slotted in with lots of arrows. It is really easy and would not run risk of breaking hoover. Using hoover with a very full bag is probably not good for it either.

It comes down to what you are paying for and have agreed in a contract.

A 'cleaner' is not a servant he/she is there to carry out duties for a payment that have been agreed

If you are asking extra YABU

Cutiecat · 12/12/2012 18:57

backforhelp - She is English.
Elfbambinos - I pay her £12. I have no fingernails to break and I am not afraid of hardwork. I have three DC and run my own business. If a job needs doing I will do it but not if I am paying someone else to.

I wish some of you would stop making out the op is being a snooty cow, treating the cleaner as a slave. She has already said that she tidies before the cleaner arrives, loads the dishwasher etc.....comments like 'I'm sure it would not break your fingernails to empty the hoover bag' just come across as snipey, inverted snobbery.

Having asked, and being shown how to at least twice, the cleaner is still not changing the (simple) bag.For god's sake...if the cleaner thinks that changing a hoover bag is beneath her professional duties, then she needs to rethink cleaning as a job choice.

natation · 12/12/2012 19:02

If you're that bothered about it, write it into your cleaner's contract all the things you expect her to do without being asked. Thank goodness I do my own cleaning, so I can only blame myself if I don't change the hoover bag.

PuffPants · 12/12/2012 19:02

Mine does it. I wouldn't know how to. Of course it's her job. I'm lucky though, I have a cleaner who takes pride in her work. Friends of mine have cleaners who seem to think actual cleaning is somehow beneath them.

Cutiecat · 12/12/2012 19:03

Thank you Hilda.

£12, for how long?
Maybe she doesn't feel confident doing it, I wouldn't have a clue how to empty mine. Our cleaner does it. Wink

Cutiecat · 12/12/2012 19:05

£12 an hour for 4 hours.

YANBU

I have a similar thing with my cleaner. She empties the bins then leaves the bin bag in random places. Yesterday it was the bathroom. Last week the dining room?! My previous cleaners have always taken the bag out on their way out. Can't work out if I'm expecting too much.

Iggly · 12/12/2012 19:06

£12 for 4 hours?!

OutragedAtThePriceOfFreddos · 12/12/2012 19:08

Agree with Hilda's post.

£12 an hour is very generous for a job that requires no qualifications. I'm in the wrong career!

bigbuttons · 12/12/2012 19:08

Of course she should change a bloody hoover bag. Lazy mare, that's part of the job! IMO if she won't change a hoover bag she will be cutting corners in other ways too. You can't be a cleaner and be precious about getting stuck in. Does she not empty the bucket after she has finished mopping either? It's that ridiculous.

elfbambinos · 12/12/2012 19:10

Cutiecat · 12/12/2012 19:10

Iggly - No. £12 an hour for 4 hours. £48 a week.

I am going to put my children to bed. Thank you for your comments. Some have been helpful.

It wad passive aggressive of you to 'cheerfully tell her where the bags are blah blah blah'....just frigging ask her why she doesn't want to change your skanky Hoover bag and stop not picking about your staff in the internet

HildaOgden · 12/12/2012 19:11

Iggly.......£12 per hour......£48 for 4 hours work.

Cutiecat · 12/12/2012 19:11

Yes £12 an hour. I know. I feel I am being fleeced but I do really need the help. I think it is time to find a new cleaner.

Night all.

QueenStromba · 12/12/2012 19:12

Is she asthmatic by any chance? I have asthma and changing a hoover bag could put me in the hospital.

Iggly · 12/12/2012 19:12

Yes yes I misread.

£12 an hour is a lot IMO. we pay £11 an hour of which £8 goes to the cleaner, the rest to the agency for "admin", insurance etc
