to think blogs are crap?

Admittedly I haven?t read all that many, but I have read a few?all of which are just drivel. Is anyone really interested in the minutiae of someone else?s life to that extent?
Why would you write one? Why would you think other people want to read it?

(Obviously I am missing something aren?t I? Confused)

YANBU -many blogs are written by opiniated self promoters who are more interested in getting paid for click throughs than anything else.

sparklytinselandthings · 11/12/2012 12:43

Yes, YABU. It's ridiculous to say that 'blogs are crap.' What all of them? Every single one of them?! Hmm That's like saying all magazines are crap, or all telly programmes.
Never mind the fact that there's hundreds of different types of blogs out there, all writing about various subjects.
They're not all about 'explosive nappy' moments. Even if they were though, so what?
You don't have to read them. Just like you don't have to read a celeb mag if you don't want to.
I find it interesting that Mumsnet has a blog network, when the non blogging Mumsnet users seem to have an irrational hatred of all things blog.
I'm a blogger myself, and have seen the difference between here and other parenting sites when it comes to blogs. Another site I won't mention is very supportive of blogs, so why isn't this one when it has just as big a blog network community?

takataka · 11/12/2012 12:47

Yes, it has a bloggers forum. In the 'other stuff' bit I think (think I've got that section right without looking! Smile

fuzzypicklehead · 11/12/2012 13:11

I'm sure some blogs are crap. But then (I assume) that those blogs will attract little or no traffic and thus no revenue.

Some are bloody brilliant! It isn't just about the writing, it's about finding something that a) you know about, and b) other people want to find out about. If you can do that, you can supplement your income quite nicely.

WorraLorraTurkey · 11/12/2012 13:12

I don't really understand what you're saying?

If people don't like blogs/bloggers then they don't like them.

I don't see why choosing to post on the MN chat forums should make you any more or less 'supportive' of blogs?

JamNan · 11/12/2012 13:24

Redbindy

You are absolutely right there. Quite few bloggers have lifted information and copyrighted images off my own website without permission and used them to promote their own blogs/businesses. decor8 is a prime example

Jins · 11/12/2012 13:27

I don't follow blogs but I dip into some ocacsionally if a search has brought them up.

I haven't got the patience or the memory for blogging

WorraLorraTurkey · 11/12/2012 13:27

Is decor8 a blogging site or someone's MN nickname?

sparklytinselandthings · 11/12/2012 13:42

I was just comparing the difference between here and another parenting blog forum, and there's a clear difference.
If you were to post a (relevant) blog post link on a thread here, you're likely to get your virtual head ripped off, and/or your blog criticised. (Happened to me once. Have seen another one have the same thing happen.)
Other place is far friendlier towards blogs, regardless of whereabouts you post.
Here it's only acceptable to mention the word blog on the blogging section.
This thread title says it all really to what the attitude towards bloggers are by people who don't write one.

givemeaclue · 11/12/2012 14:03

Not so much naval gazing, more just boring, gift basket

Pantofino · 11/12/2012 14:12

Did you mean to sound quite THAT rude, givemeclue?

Ephiny · 11/12/2012 14:17

Surely not all blogs are about the minutiae of someone's life? None of the ones I read are like that.

swooosh · 11/12/2012 14:21

I read ones that interest me....beauty, fashion, food.

Thisisaeuphemism · 11/12/2012 14:23

There are thousands of blogs out there, so inevitably some aren't going to be as good as others. There's no editor, so as jins said, you have to be patient and willing to seek out stuff yourself. I like that tho - I like that there's no Organisation working as the gatekeeper - its more democratic and it is the way of the future.

There is some brilliant writing on some blogs - far, far superior to stuff you'd find in many newspapers and magazines.

TheGrinchWhoStoleTweasels · 11/12/2012 14:28

Surely saying "blogs are crap" is as useful as saying "books are crap" or "television programmes are crap" or newspapers are crap".

You don't have to like them, doesn't mean they're shit.

PetiteRaleuse · 11/12/2012 14:29

I've hardly bought any magazines since I discovered blogs. There are some brilliant ones, and some utter drivel. Te great thing is no- one forces anyone to read any of them. YABU.

givemeaclue · 11/12/2012 14:31

I read a lot of great blogs mostly American ones though, about home decor etc.

givemeaclue · 11/12/2012 14:31

Pantofino-yes.

MarshaBrady · 11/12/2012 14:32

Some are good.

There are loads as unlike tv or books it doesn't cost to create them or take that much time, so anyone can blog. But still just don't look at the ones you don't like.

I'm not into the this is my family and children ones.

I don't look at many tbh. Prefer the conversational style of mn.

ClippedPhoenix · 11/12/2012 14:33

I'm also in the waste of time brigade, why on earth would I want to read about someone elses life to such a extent? They just smack of the person writing them being very self absorbed.

MarshaBrady · 11/12/2012 14:34

There's a couple of pictorial ones that are good. No writing. But then pinterest is better for images.

FlaminNoraImPregnantPanda · 11/12/2012 14:34

markforeman.wordpress.com/

Have a read of this one. Although make sure you have a cloth handy to mop up the mess as your brain leaks out of your ears.

YouCanBe · 11/12/2012 14:35

I would not go out of my way to proclaim it, for fear of causing unnecessary upset, but I have rarely read a blog that didn't bore me to death.
