I once snorted lemsip for the same problem, almost choked and then puked in the sink.
Antibiotics might be different though?

valiumredhead · 09/12/2012 16:34

A to flannel on your forehead and a cold one on the back of your neck really gets your nose running weirdly!

valiumredhead · 09/12/2012 16:34

HOT

Startail · 09/12/2012 16:38

DD is really suffering with this too, she gone out to stand about in the cold, not sure that's going to make her feel any better? but I stopped her doing something yesterday and she's just fed up of mopping round the house feeling yuck.

Maybe the cold will make her nose actually run and cleat it a bit.

Hugs to all, 'tis something medical science jolly well ought to have a fix fir.

Startail · 09/12/2012 16:38

Depends how you feel about Reflexology, but I've been told that massaging the pads of your fingers and (maybe getting someone else to massage) the pads of your toes, can help to clear blocked sinuses. I often get bad sinus pain with colds, but just about manage to keep it under control with ibuprofen/paracetamol.

ndep · 09/12/2012 17:34

I have taken on a nom-de-plume for this - but go & lie down on your bed, find your favourite erotic book & give yourself an orgasm. It does wonders for clearing blocked sinuses.

(And, if it doesn't work for you, at least it ain't painful or expensive Wink )

Bluebelleswood · 09/12/2012 21:43

Buy yourself "sinus rinse" from boots it's about £16.00.
If you are feeling flush ( no pun intended!) you could purchase sinupulse. Amazon stocks it.
Both work really well for me. The sinupulse gives more immediate relief.
I suffered with sinus problems for years before my new ENT consultant recommended using a saline wash.
I do hope it works for you too.

Bluebelleswood · 09/12/2012 21:45

Neilmed manufacture sinus rinse. It's with the cold cures in boots. Make sure you buy the rinse kit and not just the saline mix packets.

Also a sufferer..

Read online that hanging head upside down really helps, so i sat on the edge of the bed and hung my head towards my feet and it really did work to get things moving!

other thing that does it is in the shower if i get a bit of water up my nose!

NettoHoHoHoSuperstar · 09/12/2012 22:43

Love you.
Xmas Grin
I was going to call you, but I fear you'd yell at me down the phone.
'Fuuuck off, off, fuck, and I hate you'

JazzyTheSnowman · 09/12/2012 22:45

I haven't bought a neti-pot, because I refuse point-blank to purchase something that can be improvised until I discover whether it actually works or not - somehow I don't think anyone would take a faulty one back after it had been in my nose!

I basically got one of those pots you use to refill an iron with and I used that (covering the big hole in the top of course!).

IT WORKED A TREAT. A Neti-Pot is on my list! Seriously guys - it takes a while, but I do it weekly now and I've barely sufferent with anything. It's a very odd sensation but once you get used to it you're raring.

CuriousMama · 09/12/2012 22:49

Neti pot they do help as has been said.

I used to suffer terribly, mainly on my left side. I had a septoplasty operation in July and haven't suffered much since. I am a bit blocked up at the moment but not much, dss have had a cold so think I've had a milder version? I can't find my neti pot though Sad

OscarPistoriusBitontheside · 09/12/2012 22:50

In had a terribly blocked up ear from the in-->out iyswim. Someone on here said try a nasal saline spray. so I bought the cheapest child's one I could find in boots.

(My sinus pain always murders my ears.)

It worked. Cleared my sinuses a treat! Even did ds' with them too and it cleared his. Grin Worked where antibiotics failed!

Hassled · 09/12/2012 22:54

Sinus pain is the pain of the devil - you have all my sympathies.

As much steam as you can bear (alternate in from the nose/out from the mouth and then in from the mouth/out through the nose, towel over your head and the bowl to make a sort of steamy chamber) and yes, then lie on the bed with a newspaper or mag on the floor and dangle your head off the end. Gravity does help.

CuriousMama · 09/12/2012 22:55

Please use distilled or previously boiled water with a neti pot though.

apostrophethesnowman · 09/12/2012 22:57

I take it you've tried antibiotics before thinking or resorting to the spoon solution? Xmas Shock

On a serious note, it's really horrible when you get a sinus infection. Even one course of antibiotics doesn't always work. Last winter I had a couple of courses before it started to feel better. You may also need a different antibiotic.

...as an aside, my brother had sinus trouble for years, then he had a dental x-ray for something unrelated and they discovered that the sinus space was totally taken up with a (benign) tumour. He had to go into hospital to have it removed, and rarely suffered after that.

BerthaKitt · 09/12/2012 23:09

a little treat of sinus sporn

manicinsomniac · 09/12/2012 23:18

no helpful suggestions but I feel your pain.

HazeltheMcWitch · 09/12/2012 23:43

I've had my sinuses drilled - twice! First time when I was about 12.
Guess what - they grot up again. Mine are now. I am QUEEN of ENT problems!!

Ignore whichever sadist said put your head upside down. it feels like someone is attacking my eyes with knives when I do that.

Agree that the salt water flush/neti can help manage. I'd avoid the menthol ones though, as they're an irritant if used long term. The other thing I find useful is sort of massage/pushing - so along eyebrows (inside to out), bridge of nose (down/round/out) and along 'cheekbones'.

Warmth can help pain, so a hottie on pillow at night.
And if you're in CRAZY amounts of pain for weeks on end, may need ABs.

HazeltheMcWitch · 09/12/2012 23:46

And agree with the Neilmed rinse that Bluebelleswood reccos. I've tried a load. Honestly, I'd sweep up on mAstermind if 'all things muccal' was my specialist subject.

It is easy to use, you sort of squeeze and sniff whilst making KAAHHH sounds like a crow.

giraffesCantFlyLikeReindeer · 10/12/2012 00:53

Massage thing does help. It is eyebrows and one cheek bone that are the worse areas.

Have ABs, spray, betahistine, some other sickness drig, cocod and ibuprofen.

laptopwieldingharpy · 10/12/2012 01:03

The neti flush really is a lifesaver.
try the squirt bottle rather than the neti pot. Very easy to use.
Its great for "maintenance" for those with allergic rhinitis as well as flushing out a nasty bout of infection before antibiotics or corticoids become necessary.

Abitwobblynow · 10/12/2012 06:15

Poor Giraffe! If you start feeling really poorly, please see GP/antibiotics.

I had sinusitis once - pulling my teeth out to relieve the pressure seemed like a very logical solution at the time.

but as that helped me kick smoking once and for all it was worth it

KAAAAAH! Ha ha ha !

Hope these suggestions work Giraffe, poor you.
