Dh purchased advent calendars for himself and our 2dc.
AIBU to think this was too much to spend. (Lego)

I bought DP a Lego advent calender for his birthday (as part of his presents) and the two boys one each but again they're part of the budget for their Christmas presents.

They are all obsessed with Lego so a perfect present for each. So no it's not unreasonable if you can afford it.

wonderingsoul · 09/12/2012 12:36

if i could afford it. mosst deffinatly.
but i cant.
so may get one in the sale for next year for them to share.

i have my own advent calender to.. chocolate one though.... kid at heart really.

salemsparklys · 09/12/2012 14:26

I got my DD2 the lego friends one in John Lewis for £8.80 last week, she had wanted to buy one with her pocket money but toys r us had sold out so it was a nice surprise for her even if it was on the 4th dec.

PoppyWearer · 09/12/2012 14:47

I have the Selfridges one again this year (I found out about it from MN, therefore you are to blame!) but then it counts as a Christmas present as I usually don't get much to open on Christmas Day itself, we usually put the money towards family stuff.

DC1 has a Lego Friends one and it's worth every penny, she has been so excited about it! I saved her Playmobil one from last year to reuse with DC2 next year, he will be none the wiser, so that was £10 well spent IMHO! Her Lego Friends one can probably be reused in a couple of years' time too. If you save the bits and use them again it works out ok.

PearlyWhites · 09/12/2012 14:56

No its not crazy because they are great value, my dc have Lego and playmobil , it's Christmas don't be a scrooge

helpyourself · 09/12/2012 15:32

What's done is done! Yes it was v extravagant, but moaning about the cost now, however justified would take away the pleasure- then it would be £60 wasted.

BinksToEnlightenment · 09/12/2012 15:50

The Selfridges advent calendar! My heart skipped a beat. It's so beautiful!

NoHaudinMaWheest · 09/12/2012 17:31

Of course you can reuse Playmobil advent calendars. We had one for 12+ years until the boxes fell apart. It becomes tradition; it doesn't matter if they have seen the figures before. There is the element of recognition 'Oh its the baby deer' or whatever.

bedmonster · 09/12/2012 18:39

Well I have the selfridges one and Dp and dc have ones from hotel chocolat so that's way over budget!!
Might go for lego ones for dc next year, they have been spying up their friends one today.

helenlynn · 09/12/2012 20:27

In that case, cinders005, YANB in the least U; if they weren't looked after last time then they can't have been properly appreciated, and it's certainly a lot of money for something the DCs aren't really bothered about.

I'd go by the "how much fun are you getting out of this?" criterion for DH as well, but even if he's in transports of childish delight over tiny Millenium Falcons every morning oh gosh, tiny Millenium Falcons! Now I want one! it was a bit rotten of him to get something for everyone except you.

clippityclop · 09/12/2012 20:34

We bought a Lego Friends one for £11.00, less than half prince and it's proving really popular. DDs are already planning to put it away and use it as a decoration next year. If you have £60 spare on that kind of thing good luck to you!

SweetMingePie · 09/12/2012 20:35

I got my three DC a Lego one to share between them this year, they've enjoyed it so far. Will probably get them one next year as well.

Loislane78 · 09/12/2012 21:39

Crikey I must be getting really old as I had to reread your post to triple check it was £60 for 3 advent. Not sure what I think about that - madness, yes, I think it's madness

mrskeithrichards · 09/12/2012 22:06

Lego is an investment!

helenlynn · 09/12/2012 23:42

mrskeithrichards, I hope I'm not the umpteenth person to say this, but you're missing an absolutely diamond festive nc to mrscliff...

I had to say.

LibrarianByDay · 09/12/2012 23:44

What mrskeithrichards said! It's an investment!

We have lego advent calendars this year.

Cabrinha · 10/12/2012 00:35

I paid £18 for the Playmobil one, our first year. I would say it cost £17, as I didn't buy a 99p chocolate that frankly has awful chocolate and isn't that interesting.
So far, I'd say it's had 2 hours play per day, on average. So - £1 an hour. Compare that to say, £2 an hour at our local soft play, and it starts to look like good value for money. And that excludes the value of her interest and excitement in opening it.
Yes, it's a lot of money, but if you can afford it, I think your child can get a reasonable amount of value.
For me, it's £18 well spent, not £1 wasted.

Keletubbie · 14/12/2012 14:23

As a 30 yr old woman with her own Lego Star Wars advent calendar, YABU ;)

Lego is 'the thing' this year, so my daughter and I have all 3 between us. The City one was a late purchase and with a voucher only cost £5, so it barely counts...

snowflakehellokitty · 14/12/2012 14:33

i was so tempted to buy dd1 7 yrs old the moshi one as she is mad on moshi monsters at £20 on amazon decided too much

Keletubbie · 14/12/2012 14:38

snowflakehellokitty - the Moshi Monsters one is down to £8 at Amazon now, so possibly worth picking up for next year?

Melpomene · 14/12/2012 14:48

IMO it seems extravagant to buy separate expensive calendars for each child. My dds share an advent calendar and it acts as a family focus point, with taking turns to open the windows, and playing together, being part of the pleasure.

(Though it's easy for me as I have two dds close in age; I admit I might feel differently about having separate calendars if I had a 10yo who liked robots and a 3yo who liked Peppa pig!)

My dds have a lego calendar this year and have got loads of pleasure out of it - dd2 got out craft materials and made a castle for one of the characters, and she's also written them all a Christmas card.

TheCortanaThatStoleChristmas · 14/12/2012 16:26

Obviously day 14 now and I can say that this has been money well spent for us. DS tends to leave it until after school and we've all came together to see him open it and put the toy together. DP and I have already agreed to get him one next year as he's loved every minute of it.
