To ask if you "announce" or let people know you're about to go to the loo?

My DH and I are having a "discussion" about this. He thinks its stupid and rude to tell people with you that you're about to go and use the loo. He's telling me how he gets pissed off when people he works with tell him they're going to the toilet.

I think there's nothing wrong with it. It's good to tell people where you're going so they know. Infact I'd go as far to say its good manners to tell people you're with where you are off to for a few minutes.

Who is right?

Depends on the kind of work Nickel.

In a shop - definitely.

In an office I often leave my desk to go to talk to someone or to go to the loo or to make a cup of tea and the only one of those I would announce is the tea because I would offer to make one for other people.

It really depends on the situation.

If I was in a conversation with someone I'd tell them where I was going.

If I was watching TV at home I wouldn't say where I was going, I would just go.

but what if people think you're going to make tea and not offering them one?
you could be having a sneaky break.

i used to work in offices where every minute was accounted for, so you'd have to say where you were going.

what if someone rings for you and you're gone, but noone knows where, so they don't know how long you'll be gone? then you have to tell the person on the other end that you don't know when they'll ring back - people don't like that.

It's not that kind of office.

There is not a phone on my desk.

I could indeed be having a sneaky break, but I work from home 2 days a week so I think I have been deemed "trustworthy".

If someone thought I was making tea without offering I would be deeply Blush - as if I would do a thing like that! :o

Totally depends on the situation. If I were in my living room at home I wouldn't, but if you are not going to be at your desk / work station and that means someone might need to cover you or be able to give callers an idea of when you'd be back, then of course I would.

I've wondered about this too. At home I always say but my dh never does. He just disappears. Sometimes he goes for a nap or to do some work so is missing for hours. At work I never did but I was a teacher so as long as I went during break time nobody cared.
