to be afraid landlord is going to be put off

a landlord has just offered us our dream property. We are going to sign a contract tomorrow. The lady is really nice. Its her own property, rather than through an estate agents. At the viewing we were so excited we forgot to mention the fact we have two guinea pigs. They are indoor pigs and get cleaned every day so do not smell, but now we are afraid this will put landlord off and she may withdraw offer, so please, any landlords on here...would this put you off and would you expect your potential tenants to mention pets such as guineas, or just cats and dogs? Ive lived in two other different properties with my lovely piggies, and theyve never been any bother before.

Thanks

I wouldn't be put off at all by two guinea pigs. Pot bellied ones however... Grin

I would make sure you mention them though, probably best to be as upfront as you can about things like this in order to build trust between yourselves and potential landlord.

Flossbert · 07/12/2012 20:16

Definitely best to mention them soonest. Did the advert say "no pets"?

Tryharder · 07/12/2012 20:18

Do you have to mention the piggies? I wouldn't personally.

annabanana84 · 07/12/2012 20:23

If they were to ask if we have any pets tomorrow, then we will of course tell them all about our two little piggeroos, but otherwise we are tempted not to say anything as people can have misconceptions about rodents that theyre stinky....they smell better than some humans! ha!

Because if I were a landlord I wouldnt want cats or dogs in my property because of hair on the carpets and maybe little accidents on the floor, but guineas dont poo or wee on the floor and although some have moulting hair, mine dont.

Tell her, otherwise you have the constant stress of trying to conceal it from her. Tell her you will have the carpets cleaned or replaced if they are badly damaged at the end of the tenancy.

NotMostPeople · 07/12/2012 21:08

When we rented we told the agent that we had two piggies who live inside during the winter. They said that they didn't count and they're only bothered about larger pets like dogs, cats etc. you should tell her but I'd say you should e ok.

katiecubs · 07/12/2012 21:13

I had this issue too, found the perfect place and didn't mention the cat (or that i was 7 months pregnant). I figured we would just not mention it until i found out the letting agent was renting the flat above ours!

By then we had signed the agreement so when we collected the keys i said 'oh i happened to notice in the contract that it says no pets, but you know we have a cat right?' He said it was fine luckily :)

Anyway i would probably just mention it after you move in if you really want the property and if they do have a problem offer to increase the deposit to cover any extra damage that may concern them.

I'm a landlord and wouldn't be bothered at all, but then I generally am ok with larger pets too, provided there is an agreement about having carpets professionally cleaned.

whois · 07/12/2012 22:07

Totally depends.

What the property is like (carpets? Tiles?)
Where will you keep them?
Will they roam free and so be able to poo wee scratch chew etc?

I'd probably be ok but would write into the tenancy agreement they were to be kept in the dining room where I have hard floor, not to roam free, pay for cleaning and take a larger deposit.

maddening · 07/12/2012 23:02

I had a gerbil and my then new landlord wrote a clause into the contract allowing me to keep the gerbil there despite his usual no pets clause.

Gillyweed001 · 08/12/2012 03:20

We aren't allowed pets in our rented property, however, letting agents told us as long as its an animal kept in a cage, its fine. We had 3 hamsters at one point! I would mention it though.

DublinMammy · 08/12/2012 03:46

I'm a landlord and our current tenants have a little dog, no problem with us, they asked before signing the lease. I would expect to be told about any pet though as there is a "no pets" clause which we could invoke if someone wasn't upfront about it.

differentnameforthis · 08/12/2012 04:30

but guineas dont poo or wee on the floor

Hmm Yes they do. Just not usually where you can see it. In my experience they are hiders! And the wee rarely leaves puddles as they a re tiny. But they do definitely wee on the floor.

MajesticWhine · 08/12/2012 10:29

they don't poo or wee on the floor if they are in their cages.

differentnameforthis · 08/12/2012 12:03

Well technically they poo & wee on the floor of their cages Grin

Anyway, I was assuming that op lets then run around, perhaps she doesn't, in which case you are quite right, whine

igotaway · 08/12/2012 14:15

I'm a landlady too and I'd want to be informed

What would happen if you let them out for a walkabout and they dissapeared? you'd then have the hassle of maybe picking up floorboards and dismantling pipes!
Sorry, I always look at the worst possible scenario!
