find it weird when people talk about themselves in the first person?

I don't know many.

But one woman (we'll call her Lauren) who I work with does this constantly.

For example f I ask "would you like a cup of coffee?"

She replies "yes, but first Lauren has to make a phone call"

Is it me, or is that just plain weird?

And yes, referring to yourself in the third person is odd. Pretentious, unless of course you are the reigning monarch, in which case it's just old fashioned (IMHO).

I refer to myself in the third person a lot but that's because I have a toddler. If I did it in any other context I would definitely expect funny looks!

Is she a mum? You know how you refer to yourself as mummy to the DCs, maybe she forgets herself? I know I've nearly called myself mummy in work more than once!

Even at that, it's still a weird thing to do. And it's third person, first person is 'I'

It is a bit like 'mummy needs to go round to grandma's, then when she gets back, you and mummy will make a cake'. Kids must spend much of this early life wondering 'who is this mummy you speak of? When's she getting here?'

As a one off like PP's have said getting mixed up with 'mummy has to..' It would be fine, but all the time is very weird... Do you have to wait for her to speak to you first, does she insist in everyone standing when shewalks into the room?

Parents do it all the time to their children. "Mummy is doing this".

Weird - does she work in HR? They're all a bit like that...

As an aside, if I was the Queen I would spend all of my free time walking into and out of rooms just for a laugh.

I used to have a friend who referred to herself as 'me' as in 'me is tired' which I found odd.

As a tangent, I absolutely loved 'Bright Lights, Big City' which is written in the second tense, as soon as I'd got over the weirdness of sentences like 'you wonder how...' etc.

I knew someone who used to commentate on themselves in the whispered style of a snooker commentator. Not while they were playing snooker by the way, while they were doing paperwork, making tea etc
