find it weird when people talk about themselves in the first person?

I don't know many.

But one woman (we'll call her Lauren) who I work with does this constantly.

For example f I ask "would you like a cup of coffee?"

She replies "yes, but first Lauren has to make a phone call"

Is it me, or is that just plain weird?

It is odd (but I don't think that's 'first person' is it? - waits to be stood in the dunces corner)

Wallison · 07/12/2012 13:40

It's weird. She's weird. I hope she's not your friend, because otherwise that would make you weird for having weird friends. You weirdo.

WileywithSageStuffing · 07/12/2012 13:40

Wiley agrees it is totally weird Grin

Illgetmycoat · 07/12/2012 13:41

I think it's the third person. Sarah Ferguson does it.

tak1ngchances · 07/12/2012 13:41

That's the third person

Firawla · 07/12/2012 13:42

yes that is weird!

WankbadgersBauble · 07/12/2012 13:45

I have a weird feeling Julius Caesar did that, too. However, that doesn't preclude your friend from being a tad doolally.

PoppyAmex · 07/12/2012 13:46

That's the third person and yes it's bizarre.

Football players and lounge lizards do it quite often. Grin

MrsMerryMeeple · 07/12/2012 13:48

That's the third person.

First person = I or we
Second person = you (single or plural)
Third person = he, she, they

And yes, referring to yourself in the third person is odd. Pretentious, unless of course you are the reigning monarch, in which case it's just old fashioned (IMHO).

FuriousRox · 07/12/2012 13:49

That's the third person and yes it's totally odd.

I refer to myself in the third person a lot but that's because I have a toddler. If I did it in any other context I would definitely expect funny looks!

InsertCleverNameChangeHere · 07/12/2012 13:51

Is she a mum? You know how you refer to yourself as mummy to the DCs, maybe she forgets herself? I know I've nearly called myself mummy in work more than once!

Even at that, it's still a weird thing to do. And it's third person, first person is 'I'

valiumredhead · 07/12/2012 13:52

It's third person and it's bizarre and I would laugh at anyone who did that Grin

Celticlassie · 07/12/2012 13:52

It is a bit like 'mummy needs to go round to grandma's, then when she gets back, you and mummy will make a cake'. Kids must spend much of this early life wondering 'who is this mummy you speak of? When's she getting here?'

Why not 'I'?Grin

Celticlassie · 07/12/2012 13:53

Oops... Cross posted.

allswellthatroswell · 07/12/2012 13:53

Lol. Ok sorry I'm stupid.

It is third person, yes you are all right.

OP posts:
Jingleflobba · 07/12/2012 13:55

As a one off like PP's have said getting mixed up with 'mummy has to..' It would be fine, but all the time is very weird... Do you have to wait for her to speak to you first, does she insist in everyone standing when shewalks into the room?
Is she in fact the queen? Xmas Grin

TrillsCarolsOutOfTune · 07/12/2012 14:09

First person: I
Second person: You
Third person: He/She/They

So YABU to find it weird when someone talks about themselves in the first person.

Parents do it all the time to their children. "Mummy is doing this".

Nancy66 · 07/12/2012 14:11

Weird - does she work in HR? They're all a bit like that...

Wallison · 07/12/2012 14:12

As an aside, if I was the Queen I would spend all of my free time walking into and out of rooms just for a laugh.

WhereAngelsFearToTread · 07/12/2012 14:21

I used to have a friend who referred to herself as 'me' as in 'me is tired' which I found odd.

As a tangent, I absolutely loved 'Bright Lights, Big City' which is written in the second tense, as soon as I'd got over the weirdness of sentences like 'you wonder how...' etc.

Saltycopporn · 07/12/2012 14:26

I knew someone who used to commentate on themselves in the whispered style of a snooker commentator. Not while they were playing snooker by the way, while they were doing paperwork, making tea etc

cumfy · 07/12/2012 14:48

cumfy finds this entirely normal.

DragonMamma · 07/12/2012 14:50

Very weird indeed.

monsterchild · 07/12/2012 14:53

Monsterchild wonders if the Queen calls herself My Majesty when she's having some inner monologue, or just Betsy?

NoKnidForABed · 07/12/2012 14:56

We do find this very strange indeed.
