To think the new Job Centre website is crap?

You can't search by job category and distance.
You can't search by salary at all.
Even when searching within the smallest distance possible from my home, it's still showing me jobs which are much further away. You can't even sort the search results to show the nearest first.

Wtf have they done this to it for? It worked quite well before.

It always was crap, only difference now is that they want all your personal details to apply for a job and I also noticed the drop down box of why you're not applying for that particular job!

StickEmWithThePointyEnd · 06/12/2012 13:41

I noticed that too. It seems they have changed it with those on JSA in mind. I still don't see how having to search through 1000+ jobs supposedly within two miles of your home, without any way to narrow down the type of job, is in any way helpful.

Can anyone recommend some better job sites?

Reed.co.uk, Totaljobs.com

HaudYerWheeshtFannyBaws · 06/12/2012 13:42

I hate it as well. I used to be able to type in 'all jobs' and now I can't. Frustrating

redskyatnight · 06/12/2012 13:45

indeed.co.uk is good (collates job adverts from other sites).
Depending on the type of job you're looking for there are industry specific sites. e..g jobserve good for IT jobs.

TheOriginalNutcracker · 06/12/2012 13:47

Yup, I was going to post the very same thing.

A lot of the results I am getting on a search sem to be agencies too.

Their spelling mistakes are still making me laugh though. Yeu Tree Pub lol

stopthatmavis · 06/12/2012 13:50

cv-library, jobsgopublic, changeboard - I'm on a roll now!

StickEmWithThePointyEnd · 06/12/2012 13:50

Thanks for the recommendations.

It's a shame about the job centre site though, I found it was very useful for finding local part time jobs in the past.

I tend to just put my locaton in and within 10 miles and leave all the other fields blank, then sort by date. Does mean you have to wade through it all though.

FrothyOM · 06/12/2012 14:37

YANBU It's crap

GalaxyDefender · 06/12/2012 16:17

Totally agree. I also couldn't directly apply to a job that would have been perfect, as the link provided on the jobcentre website led me to spam. Broken spam, at that. Had to go around and do it manually, which was fine, but a faff I didn't really need.

So far, Indeed is the best one I've found. I found three jobs in my area in a week there, and it's easy to do.

Shelfy · 06/12/2012 16:24

have you got a link please?

Shelfy · 06/12/2012 16:33

just had alook and it looks dreadful the new site

Ghostsgowoooh · 06/12/2012 18:18

These other job sites are all very well if you are skilled in IT or management or something but if your unskilled like me and only fit for menial work and retail then the job centre site is the only way to go.

I won't be using it, too much faff. Will ring up job centre plus and job find that way

LaCiccolina · 06/12/2012 18:20

Workhound.co.uk
Capabilityjane
Workingmums.co.uk

OodKingWenceslas · 06/12/2012 18:48

It's always been awful, the old app was much more practical but there's no new app( despite the old app saying there is Hmm)

It's nearly all agencies for our area. Biggest problem for us is the 'as the crow flies' distance as we get places 2-3h drive away but not the nearest town 40 mins away!

Emmielu · 06/12/2012 18:50

Have you signed up to it? I had to in order to get a better look at things. I dont really notice much difference but i had noticed they dont advertise voluntary work anymore.

LineRunnerWithBellsOn · 06/12/2012 18:57

The drop down box of why you're not applying for the job is ridiculous. How about putting some real actual reasons in the list, and not just a fantasy Daily Mail of supposed excuses? It reads like,

Please select one of the following reasons why you are not applying for this job:
Can't be bothered
Too fussy
I'm a feckless waster

FFS

How about actualy allowing people to have a free text box to be able to say things like, 'I have no idea in which city this job is located, or what it actually entails, or what hours and days are involved.'

StickEmWithThePointyEnd · 06/12/2012 19:19

I've just sent them a message via their "contact us" page with the suggestions for making the search facility better. It's an abolute farce.

Been privatised that's why!!!

trinitybleu · 06/12/2012 20:08

You want to try loading vacancies onto it. You can't have more than one advert with the same job title. Which is useful when you are looking for the same skills in 6 different corners of the country ...
