To hate boxing day shopping?

Okay, i will probably get flamed for this but here goes-
Who on earth wants to spend boxing day back at the shops when everyone has just spent the last few weeks in a shopping frenzy for christmas??
If i didnt work boxing day i certainly would not be shopping- i would be with family and enjoyin the christmas break.
Could the shopping centres close for just two days a year for staff to hav a christmas break too?

I don't think Boxing Day sales are as relevant anymore . We have discounts all year round in shops nowadays . And with the Internet and discount codes there is always a bargain to be had .

I love Boxing Day shopping. I love January and February sales too when every store has that really really cheap stuff section. I buy loads of socks and underwear and get loads of goodies. It makes me feel good.

I will be working in a shop. I could say no, but then I'd like to keep my job a little longer. Unfortunately all our young part timers are students and (conveniently for them) not local, so the old guard are stuck with it.

Like most companies head office will only have a skeleton staff in, so no real IT and customer service back up.

I haven't done a Boxing Day yet, though I have done the 27th and Jan 2nd before. The last couple of Boxing Days I have been into town with my MIL who lives on an island, so takes the chance to go to John Lewis etc while she's here. It's not as bad as the 27th.

I worked with a woman who'd get up at 5am to go to the sales on Boxing Day. Must've been a miserable Christmas.

Yanbu. Cannot understand it myself. DH works in retail and I hate the fact he has to work it. Means he can't have a drink on Christmas Day, can't join in any of the things we would like to do on Boxing Day. It sucks!

Before we had DC we went to the shops on Boxing Day, we didn't enjoy it, think we bought a plug!

I only bother going to boots in a Boxing Day.. (save my points up specially) only because I am working the 27th.. but I worked last Xmas and Boxing Day so I guess retailers and nhs staff don't get much time off for the festive season :(

Worley NHS staff are amazing. Working Christmas day, usually with lovely attitudes, Christmas cheer and saving lives. Bless them all. They must miss out on so many Family days. Once my son is grown I plan to be spending Christmas' in Hospitals and Hospices as a volunteer porter. My Dad had major emergency surgery on Christmas Eve and the ICU staff were superb all throughout his stay. One day I will pay it forward. They gave us another year with him and they will never be forgotten.

Retail staff? I'd rather they had a few days off to spend with their families and friends and I had to plan ahead about how much milk and bread I would need to last 2/3 days if all of the shops were closed.

I was shocked at year reports of £100m plus being spent online on christmas day.

I don't know what it's like to go shopping on Boxing Day - last year just before Christmas, I was handed a voucher to spend on Boxing Day in Debenhams. I asked the assistant to shoot me if I was shopping on Boxing Day.

Everyone says they hate Boxing Day shopping, so why are the shops so busy - I need to drive past a large shopping centre to get to family and the traffic is murder every year. Who are these people?

The only reason stores open on Boxing Day is because people spend (a lot of) money. Simples.

i was in chichester for boxing day last year (long story) and had a greggs sandwich for lunch. it was a total non event and horrendous and this year we will be going for a big fat hairy walk

No Mrs BW, stores are also contractually obliged to open by the shopping centres that host them.

So we can all experience the "total retail and leisure experience" that is trudging around in a circle, walking in and out of shops flogging left over sales tat and full only of people getting credit notes, have a yummy high cholesterol lunch and queue for several hours to watch a third rate Christmas movie.

I dont spend the weeks leading upto christmas frantically shopping, nor do I have any family to go to on Boxing Day, so I quite enjoy going out and getting some bargains in the sales.

My husband would rather I buy the boots he wants in the sales for about £50 than before when they will be about £75... he doesnt mind Santa being a day later!

Rwep I fear it is too late. We have been indoctrinated into the "retail is sport/leisure/religious experience".

But what was interesting was that so few people turned up on Sunday after 5pm in the Summer when the shops were open later to "augment" the Olympic experience and cement the sport/leisure connotation in our minds.

It didn't work because people saw Mo, Jess and Co and didn't say "hot damn, what I really need right now is a new dress". What they said was "let's celebrate together".

I can't understand why Boxing Day has the opposite effect. We spend fortunes on Christmas presents, then refuse to enjoy them or let the kids play with them in favour of....shopping

I can't think of anything worse than going shopping on Christmas day.
