Odd Comment from work colleague

doublemuvver · 04/12/2012 23:09

I recently got my twins' first school photos and in the package was a little desk calendar with their photo on which I've taken to work, for my desk. Showed it to my work mates and one woman said that they looked a bit "inane" . Thought it was a bit of an odd comment to say the least! OK, it's not the best photo of them (show me one school photo that is!) but.....
I did laugh it off and laughed when another colleague announced that she wouldn't be showing any of her kid's photos to her.
Anyone else had anything similar?

Very odd word to choose. I wonder if she meant something else and said the wrong word.

AngryBeaver · 04/12/2012 23:13

Does she know what inane means?! Is she a bit thick?!
I would have said "What do you mean inane?! (Then the mn line)That actually sounded quite rude, did you mean it to?"
Strange person.

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 04/12/2012 23:15

Who says somebody's kids look "inane" Xmas Confused

Wtf does that even mean wrt a kids photo ??

I would have to ask her to explain

breatheslowly · 04/12/2012 23:15

I don't think she knows what it means, as even as an insult it doesn't really make sense.

doublemuvver · 04/12/2012 23:15

yes she isn't the brightest spark. Perhaps she meant to say incredible. I did ask what she meant but she scuttled away to make tea and the rest of us were going "wtf??"

OP posts:
AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 04/12/2012 23:15

perhaps she meant "insane" ? < helpful >

chrismissymoomoomee · 04/12/2012 23:16

I don't think she meant 'inane' either. That makes no sense at all.

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 04/12/2012 23:18

"asinine" ?

that's deffo an insult

MidniteScribbler · 04/12/2012 23:19

Could she have been referring to the set up of the photos, or the background? I've had some where I really wonder what the photographer was thinking and why they couldn't have been a bit more creative.

Just trying to give her the benefit of the doubt here.

Devora · 04/12/2012 23:20

anaemic?

benign?

enigmatic?

No, I don't get it either.

McChristmasPants2012 · 04/12/2012 23:20

Inane can mean silly.

The only way it would make sense if it was the new style of school photo and she was saying that was silly iygwim

DontForgetTheSproutsLawrence · 04/12/2012 23:24

I agree with AnyFucker... I thought she meant insane. As in ''insanely happy". Mixing her metaphors?

SingingSands · 04/12/2012 23:28

Weird comment! A colleague saw my kids school photo recently and said "Oh yes, he looks really like you... But the little girl doesnt look like you".

I thought that was a bit odd, the combination of "the little girl" and "doesnt look like you" made it sound like DD was some random child gatecrashing the photo!

breatheslowly · 04/12/2012 23:29

Did she know how much they cost? That is always the bit that seems insane to me.

AnyFuckerForAMincePie · 04/12/2012 23:30

Perhaps she was juxtaposing your twins with Jedward, and really did say "insane"

ToffeeCaramel · 04/12/2012 23:37

Are they pulling a particular expression in the photo? ie. Are they looking a bit bewildered as they are not used to having their photo taken or something? If so then she could just be referring to that. ie not trying to be rude about them, but saying they look like they are not sure what is going on. Or maybe she thought it meant something else.

OkayHazel · 05/12/2012 01:02

I'm thinking 'mundane' to mean boring - maybe she's one of the few that likes the fun poses and was bored by a traditional shot?

Monty27 · 05/12/2012 01:05

How was she after she'd made the tea?

I think she's a Mrs Mallaprop Grin

mummysaidno · 05/12/2012 06:38

Maybe she is just stupid

HDee · 05/12/2012 06:53

Maybe she just had a foot-in-mouth moment and you should just move on and forget it?

We've all said things where we have immediately thought 'fuck, why the he'll did that come out of my mouth?'.

And as for the poster who suggests pointing out how rude it was...do you work in an office? Pointing out that someone was rude and making them feel like shit about it will not do great things for office harmony. Unless someone is regularly rude, to most people, YOU would be the rude one to say such a thing.

Sounds like she doesnt know what the word means.

doublemuvver · 05/12/2012 07:53

they are boy/girl twins, are smiling, look reasonably cute. Not insane though (that did make me laugh!) Like I said I did laugh it off and put it down to my colleague's general fruit loopness. I won't hold it against her but will think of an obscure adjective for her and drop it into conversation Grin

OP posts:
garlicbaubles · 05/12/2012 08:34

I think ... someone called her (or something she said) inane. Being a bit dopey, she asked what it meant. Nobody wanted to tell her she'd been called mindless so they said it means sweet. She just tried using her new word and realised she's been stitched!

Glad you're not cross about it, OP :)

garlicbaubles · 05/12/2012 08:35

Wheremomma - made me Grin
