Not to force my 11mo to crawl round Asda after me while I shop, and sod him if he can't keep up?

Because Asda's resident checkout childcare expert thinks so. She asked how old he was, and then said: "Bit old to be carried everywhere, isn't he?" I just said "Well, fingers crossed he'll be walking soon", trying to be friendly, and just got a in reply.

I wouldn't mind it it was friendly curiosity. It wasn't - I was well and truly Judged.

Well I am quite impressed you can manage to do shopping while holding an 11 month old (unless they were in a sling of course)

If you carry him now he'll grow to expect it. Do you want to be carrying a 20yo man on your back round Asda? You're making a rod for your own back.

Make him walk, and while you're at it teach him to carry the bags to the car for you.

she probably thought would be easier with pram / trolley - i would only carry mine round shops if screamy / hungary, though i guess it depends if their was someone else with you or if you where doing a lot of shopping or only going for bread

Oh dear OP! Are you sure she didn't just mean it would have been easier for you with a trolley? I put DD2 (9mo) in a trolley even if I'm just buying one thing because she's bloody heavy!!

DS (3) 'helps' bring bags of shopping into the kitchen. Somehow he always manages to pick the bag with the eggs in! you would have thought I would have learnt by now

Sorry - should have been clearer, he was in a sling, but only because I only had to get a couple of things and couldn't be bothered with the buggy.

Zimbah. What worries me is how I'll fit a 20yo in a cot.

I think you've misunderstood what she meant. I think she meant that he would be better in a pram or a trolley.

The other thing to consider is she may have thought he was much older than he looked. I know my daughter used to get strange looks when she carried her son around - or even when he was in the pram when he was about two years old. He was a big boy for his age.

In that case, I'm definitely too! He was in a baby sling...which is designed for carrying babies...and he's a baby??! WTF!

Ah, leave him to crawl after you and see the look on Judgypants face when they have to put out a lost child announcement over the tannoy...

I get those sort of comments too - I sling DD (18 months) on my back as she's a right PITA in the trolley trying to grab everything, or wanting "down" or "up" every 5 seconds. In the sling she's happy unless we pass bananas or the chocolate aisle. Then she's happy again trying to insert said banana or chocolate bar into my ear for the next 10 minutes

You sure she didn't just mean he looked heavy? I've only ever had a tiny baby in a sling myself, so if I saw you with a bigger baby, I'd think it looked like hard work andd wonder why you weren't using the trolley/pram.
I wouldn't be judging you, though, just empathising.

2yo DS always wants to carry things, the heavier and bulkier the better, as we wander round shops, so I am getting him to work hard. You'd approve.

Send her my way where she can meet an irritable pregnant woman (34 weeks) carrying a 2.5 yr old because she enjoys doing so as he's warm and fun. She won't understand but she may be wary of commenting in the future.

Baroness depends. For naice ham: Waitrose. Cabbages for me van: farmers' market. For toffee yum yums, got to be Asda.
