AIBU to think that dd has been given the wrong reading book tonight?

Example sentences from DDs book about Famous Scots tonight

"The circumstances that led to her execution are complicated"

"He was present when St Mungo's cathedral was consecrated in Glasgow in 1116 and he established 15 monasteries in the border areas"

David Hume was one of the great philosophers of the Scottish enlightenment

The whole book is written at this level. AIBU to think even though DD is quite a good reader for her age its a bit much to expect from her at the start of year 2?

Are you sure this is her reading book and not just a book that is intended for her to look at and share with you?

What type of book is it?

TurkeyGibletsGeekette · 04/12/2012 19:02

YY to her being a bit young but this sentence: David Hume was one of the great philosophers of the Scottish enlightenment is complete truth. Thought I would argue the words "of the Scottish enlightenment" are extraneous Grin

Is it a levelled book from the reading scheme or is it a book she has chosen to read from the class library?
Good non-fiction texts can be difficult to find at a lower reading level and so can be quite complicated due to the subject vocabulary. However, by the end of Y2 she will be expected to have a good working knowledge of both narrative and non-narrative texts. She'll only get this understanding by reading these kind of texts and at least at home she has an understanding and helpful mum if she gets stuck. Having said all that though it does sound as though this book has found itself into the wrong book basket! Xmas Grin

Pretty sure I read that on the first year of my degree...

stormforce10 · 04/12/2012 19:56

It is her reading book. She has one home every week night and they are a good variety of fact and fiction. She can read most of the words but she needs so many of them explaining it makes it an uphill struggle for me

she read 4 pages before we gave up and wrote a note for her teacher

Thank you though I thought maybe I was underestimating what she should be able to do at this stage

I spoke to her teacher this morning. It seems she'd somehow picked up a book meant for better readers in year 5 and 6

Never mind at least she now knows the meaning of philosopher, enlightenment, execution and consecrated among others Xmas Grin

When DD was very young, and at an age where the reading books did not have words - only pictures - her book featured a nursery where the children piled lettered blocks up to spell H-E-P-A-T-I-T-I-S.

According to the teachers,it was purely coincidence Hmm
