to ask you how I keep my NI credits but stop my child benefit payments?

I have spoken to Child Benefit, who referred me to NI, who referred me to pensions, who referred me back to CB, who have referred me to my tax office, who have referred me back to sodding Child benefit....who say that you are either entitled or you're not and if you're not then they can't not pay you the money. Which goes completely against everything that the politicians have said to those of us staying at home.....

I thought that there were assurances by ministers that you could keep your claim but not actually receive the money, thus keeping your NI credits for as long as you have children under 12.

If anyone has managed to navigate this utterly useless Dickensian system, can you please tell me how you have done so?!

OR should I just tell DH to do a sodding tax return and be done with it?!

Hmrc have an online form to disclaim the benefit. You will keep your NI credits.

I could be anyone, but I promise I work in tax at a firm of accountants!

bradyismyfavouritewiseman · 04/12/2012 14:41

the idea was that you carried on claiming it and they recovered it from your dh.

I think. Sorry not much help.

Yes, but it doesn't state anywhere that stopping claiming the money will protect your NI credits. NI say it's up to Child Benefit, and they say that it's up to NI.....is there anywhere, explicitly, where it states that if you stop claiming, your pension credits are protected?

www.hmrc.gov.uk/childbenefit/start/claiming/protect-pension.htm

You claim but you also stop the payments. So the fact you've claimed means your pension is protected but stopping the payments means you don't have to go through the tax hassle.
