I know I am BU, office re-location

I already know I am being unreasonable and in some respects I am lucky but I want to have a little rant.
I am, I think, very fortunate to do a job that I enjoy and that I think can really make a difference to peoples lives.
My role has recently been TUPE'd
A new organisation has taken over the contract for my role and my previous employer had no other role to offer me. So I still have a job, the role will only change slightly. The new organisation are not based in this area. They dont really know the area at all. It is a large area the service covers, which for the most part is rural. They have been looking for office space to base themselves in. When asked we discussed the merits of certain areas and I was very against the idea of using an office which is quite a distance. It is not conveneient for anything other than other service providers .
I should also add I dont drive and have never had a lesson.
Today I find out they have chosen the office base which is quite a long way away.
To get there by bus will take me well over 1 1/2 hours, be very expensive and mean that I will hardly see my DD.
I had previously been really excited at the prospect of working for the new organisation but not now.
I know that as a humble employee I have no say in the matter and they were just being polite in asking my opinion, I know that it comes down to costs and all those kinds of things.
Please feel free to ignore but I just wanted to get this out as I am currently working from home due to the office situation.

You do have a say in the matter you can argue the new location is not reasonable for you and that you should be made redundant, depends whether you want that though? I would re post in employment you will get home advice there

BreconBeBuggered · 04/12/2012 13:24

Why on earth do you think YABU? Perfectly reasonable to have a whinge about how the new location won't suit you as well as the old one. It's a complete pain in the arse for you.

Cantbelieveitsnotbutter · 04/12/2012 13:25

I'm not sure this applies with the role change but legally a relocation means they should offer you a travel allowance for the first few years. There should be many meetings discussing the impact, so for drivers;
Additional depreciation, insurance, petrol etc

Then additional child care costs.
Ok they won't cover it all but it will go someway.

Have a google on direct gov xx

nellyjelly · 04/12/2012 13:26

I feel for you. Not in a disimilar situation myself. Will your employers pay for the extra travel costs? Sometimes they will for an interim time.

Maybe best to look for a new job. Tahtis whatI am doing as so fed up.

Yes its an option, they are changing you terms and conditions of employment

quoteunquote · 04/12/2012 14:37

Could you learn to drive so you gain back sometime with your DD?

mrsSOAK · 04/12/2012 15:37

thank you all for our replies.
I feel like such a numpty as I barely understand the TUPE process.
The office will be 20 miles or so out, so not hugely far but it is when you have to use public transport, much of which doesnt run directly to where you need to go.
i dont think i would get anything if I tried the redundancy approach as the new organisation were quite clear that if I didnt go ahead with the TUPE process then my contract just ends, there is no redundancy option/
Childcare costs wont change but my DH will have to do drop off and pick up and I wont get home in the evenings until DD has gone to bed.
As for learning to drive, would love too and plan too, Even had a conversation with my previous employer about how useful it would be to drive and they hinted that they may be able to assist me financially, however learning to drive will take time and whilst I am now employed by the new organisation I am working from home whilst they finalise the new office details.
