he has worked for them for 5 years, been an absolutely exemplary, loyal employee. he started as a warehouseman and has been promoted 3 times since being there, and is now a senior manager. he has completely turned around his branch and its earning about 5 x the profit it was when the last manager was in charge. the last time he took time off sick was about 3 years ago (for 2 days) when he had swine flu.

he has gone in to work on loads of occasions when he has felt unwell, because they DON'T PAY SICK PAY. basically, they just ASSUME people are skiving.

so anyway, he is really poorly with flu. yet he has dragged himself in today, so he is going to infect his whole team, customers and probably not be able to even do his job properly just for the sake of "presenteeism"

and who does he work for, I hear you ask? well, its not just a small back street business who probably genuinely can't afford to pay when workers are absent - this is a huge, multi, multi million organisation....

YOU TIGHT, STINGY, HORRIBLE BASTARDS, YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELVES. Angry

I don't think those cover those of us in Primary care Pointysettia - The Partners can set their own T&Cs there. AFter 5 years I thinks we just get a few more days.

my company used to pay six months sick pay
then they changed the employment contract for new starters to three weeks sick pay
the contract for new starters has changed again no sick pay entitlement
so there is a three tier system - depending on the employment contract you started with - some people get six months some get three weeks and others get nothing

Milliways you're talking about GP surgeries and the like - yes, it's unfortunate that they can be allowed to operate under their own terms. Very unjust.

YABVU

I don't get sick pay, I'm not there so I don't see why I should get paid.

In my workplace if we got paid sick pay people would just take the piss.

There's another aspect to this as well - assuming you're not completely strapped for cash, you may feel more justified in taking a sick day to supplement holiday if you're NOT paid. The reasoning may be that as you're not being paid it isn't fraud, wheras taking a paid sick day will make you feel more guilty?

I have worked in places where people have done this when their holidays have run out and considered it fair as they weren't being paid & so had a clear concience.

I had 7 weeks sick leave paid at full rate in my previous job. I was off because bullying had turned me into a wreck who couldn't eat, sleep or leave the house. I don't feel guilty at all about it. I desperately wanted to stay in the job but they refused to do anything about the bullying. I ended up leaving as I knew I wasn't going back to the company, as one colleague put it "if you are signed off sick, your future career with them is destroyed".

Having sick pay there didn't encourage me to get signed off but it certainly made it easier to do so. I would have been driving around all day otherwise and would have been a danger to myself and others.

It makes me angry though when people are blatantly calling in sick because they have been out on the lash the night before though.

Wow, i am shocked that this is so common and in large companies. i have always had it and never considered it to be anything out of the ordinary.

op your husband may wish to consider paying for a flu jab in future to avoid being off for a prolonged period of time.
