Called British Gas regarding changing over from prepaid to DD monthly bill. Customer Service woman told me that there is no difference per unit price whether prepaid or DD bill. Now that is not what it says on the website.

Do they want people to stay prepaid as it makes them more money? I have also been told the same regarding prepaid phones or contracts.

yes, she lied, everyone knows they charge you for the pleasure of having a shit sucking meter

bradywasmyfavouriteking · 03/12/2012 11:41

Do you mean you want your pay as you go meter removed and a credit meter put in?

bradywasmyfavouriteking · 03/12/2012 11:41

Also were you speaking to the metering team or billing?

NameGotLostInCyberspace · 03/12/2012 11:46

Yes, I was asking about changing from prepaid key to monthly bill. I was talking to the prepaid team and she said she was the right person to talk to about this.

I've always assumed there was a huge standing charge on a key/card meter - in the old days when I was about 20 and renting with my boyfriend, it used to get used up very, very quickly - and when you topped it up, a proportion of it disappeared immediately even if you hadn't used the emergency credit.

First thing I've done since then has been to get the meter changed at just about every property I've rented, so it's on a normal direct debit.

from my calculations we spend roughly 40-50 per WEEK on gas and electric.
According to a quick tariff check online the bill would be around 130 per MONTH for the two if on a monthly bill.
Does that sound right? Confused

I'd be astonished if the tariff is the same. That's one of the really insidious things about pre-pay keys. Invariably the people least able to afford high gas or electricity bills are trapped into a system that makes them pay more than they would on a direct debit arrangement.

It depends on the size of your house, how hot you have the heating etc.

To give you an idea, we probably pay about 110 a month for both, the heating runs 15 rads, and hot water gets heated twice a day. I have the thermostat on about 18-20 during the day and am here most of the time.

Nights or when we're out it goes down to 16.
It's a Victorian flat, 2 bedrooms, in a converted house with super high ceilings - upstairs say they never have to have their heating on!

She either lied or has no idea how to do her job.
Yes you can speak to her but British gas now change their own meters (not sub contracted) and have a metering team. She is from the pay as you go team.
Metering operations would be able to help.

caramelwaffle · 03/12/2012 12:19

Yes. that sounds about right name Not the cost (that is individual) but the differential.

Get it changed over if you live with other people and have less tighter controls on usage than if you lived alone and were VERY strict with use.

bradywasmyfavouriteking · 03/12/2012 12:27

Your monthly payment will depend on alot of different things. Ring them back.
