To think most people with norovirus don't make a "full recovery" in a couple of days?

And that that is pretty stupid advice to give out anyway, as you can still be infectious for up to 48hrs after you stop puking and pooing? Hence why you shouldn't go back to school/work straight away?

Oh the hell :( I feel dreadful and have done since Saturday morning. At least the projectile vomiting has stopped.

This is the second bout of this I've had in three years and it's hideous.

I just want to ring up the NHS Choices website and tell them that no, most people don't get over this in a couple of days.

Anyone else poorly today? Let's feel sorry for ourselves together :( Xmas Envy = puke.

The nori virus? ? Bloody norovirus (hates autocorrect)

ISeeThreadPeople · 03/12/2012 12:05

Definitely noro here. Baby and friend both swabbed for it in hospital. I caught it straight from my friend (went out for dinner together, she phoned me later that evening to tell me she felt v ill, thinking food poisoning at that point, 12hrs later she was hospitalised). I came down with it the next day.

As taka says, gastroenteritis is a catch all term. Norovirus is a particular virus which is one of the most common causes of gastroenteritis in adults and very contagious. In dc under 5, it's most often rotavirus (also just been round the school).

I had noro 2 years ago and was fine within 48hrs actually. DH was wiped out for weeks (just started a new job, v tired and stressed). This time round I've had to exclusively bf a baby and look after a vomiting 5yo for 2 days before I came down with it and throughout and I've recovered much more slowly. DH had diarrhoea and nausea for 2 days but bounced back. So probably depends on lots of factors.

FreudiansSlipper · 03/12/2012 12:08

ds was puking and pooing all day and night the next day around lunchtime it was like he had never been poorly I am always amazed how quickly he recovers

belindarose · 03/12/2012 12:13

My 5 month old baby is still in hospital 2 weeks after we first got it. Xmas Sad

AfterEightMintyy · 03/12/2012 12:14

Oh bless her belindarose, poor baby and poor you Sad.

minouminou · 03/12/2012 12:29

It is a nasty piece of work. I had it very mildly - d&v for less than 24 hours - but it took me a good week or so to regain strength. I also lost around 4-5lbs (and I can't afford it), and I remember I was eating Hipp Organics banana and rice pudding for days. It was all I could handle. DS had it as well (he was 13 months at the time) and went back to being exclusively bf for around 10 days or so....he wouldn't touch anything else.

Even when you're not puking etc, you can take a god few days to fully get over it - it's not like feeling rough after a dodgy curry, it's a full-on viral attack, so think of it as flu with poo.

Acky123 · 03/12/2012 12:34

Flu with poo (weak :) )

By the way - probably telling you stuff you already know - but if you, or another adult, can go round cleaning doorknobs, light switches, taps etc etc, it's a good way to slow/restrict the spread.
Also, clean the bog each and every time anyone goes - seat, flush handle, under the seat, lid, floor around it and so on. The viral particles get aerosolised in the fine spray from puke and diarrhoea (lovely), and you only need as few as a hundred or so on your hands/face etc etc to the get into your mouth and bingo......

It's like someone put a mint in a bottle of Coke.....

Belindarose - I hope your daughter gets better soon...let us know.

midori1999 · 03/12/2012 12:41

Yanbu. I have either that or another D and V bug and it's just horrendous. I had it last week, stopped with the sickness but still felt rubbish, 18 month old DD got it and it has knocked her for six and now I have it again. I didn't think you could catch it twice?!

DH is working until around 10pm tonight, so I'm dreading having to look after the kids, I can't move without throwing up and the cramps are awful. DD is just sleeping now, thank goodness! (for me and her!)

minouminou · 03/12/2012 12:47

Unfortunately you can catch it a few times. My sister has worked in childcare for years and seems not to get it any more, but this is after having it lots of times over the years.

WitchOfEndor · 03/12/2012 12:58

Oh God, I got this on Saturday, the nighttime was hellish. Either freezing cold or too hot for covers plus I have a cough which helps trigger the vomiting! There's nothing worse than needing to puke and poo at the same time! I had 4 maltesers on Sunday night as I didn't want to take ibuprofen on an empty stomach and its the first time I've had to force chocolate down! So far no more d&v today but still feel like a limp rag. DH was fine though and while DS seemed to be a bit off his food he spent most of Sunday running round the house and didn't have a nap so looks like he is unscathed . I've taken today off work because I feel dreadful but also don't know how long I will be infectious for, I don't want to bring it to the office.

belindarose · 03/12/2012 13:24

Thanks, it's DS actually. He's stopped vomiting but weight has dropped so much. He's being tube fed but takin more breastfeeds now. Very, very dull in hospital though!

minouminou · 03/12/2012 13:34

That's great Belinda - DS went back to breastfeeding totally for over a week, and I think it really helped. Hang on in there.

brighthair · 03/12/2012 14:49

Yanbu. I had it for 72hrs and then got flu on the 4th day Angry
Think I was off work for just over 2 weeks and still felt like a newborn lamb trying to stand up with my wobbly legs!

spoonsspoonsspoons · 03/12/2012 15:10

I do wonder if some people are more susceptible to it. People i know seem to fall into two camps, those who have never had it and those who get it every year, often more than once.

longjane · 03/12/2012 15:36

I have got it loads of times as I worked as a carer .

I only had to clean some sick up and I got the bug.

I think one of reason is worst now is that not many people have sick pay so go into work regardless.
I know I have pick it up like this.

The only odd thing is ( touch wood) i never gave it to my ex or my kids and one was on med that compromised his immune system.
I did do all the cleaning up and made the kids use the other loo . and no one touches my sick bucket . but i still shared a bed with my ex .

Allonsy · 03/12/2012 15:52

I had some sort of vomiting bug at the beginning of the year, just vomiting not the other end but i was in bed for 3 days, spent the whole time flailing about in agony with crippling stomach pains never felt anything like it, i couldnt even keep sips of water down and even without eating was vomiting burning acid type green stuff. I lost 8 pounds in weight in those few days horrible horrible experiance

dingdongMadHairDayonhigh · 03/12/2012 16:06

YANBU. dd and I had it 2 weeks ago (well, some d and v thing anyway) and it was horrendous, although dd got over it in 48 hours (ox-like constitution that girl) - didn't send her back to school for 72hrs though. I'm immune suppressed from lung disease and it hit me so so hard, lost 9lbs or so in 2 days, couldn't stand, the full works. Horrendous thing. I'm still feeling pretty washed out although I know it's different with me, but should imagine that anyone experiencing that would feel similar. dh and ds didn't manage to get it Envy.

zlist · 03/12/2012 17:15

I obviously don't know for sure if this is what we had but it looks like all three of us have had something in the last week with quite different symptoms.
Me: sick 2 am Monday morning a few times, back to sleep, sick again shortly after waking at 7.30 am, had breakfast, sick 9 am and again at 10.25 am, bed cold and tired until 2.45 pm, sick again, then cold/tired for the rest of the evening. Woke the next day pretty much fine. No stomach aches at all or diarrhea the whole time.
DS: sick 12am Wednesday, then approx every 10-15 minutes until about 5 am. Stomach ache. Sick again mid morning. The just tired/lethargic. Seemed completely fine by sat but sick in the middle of the night with sore tummy. The back to sleep for the rest of the night. Sun seem ok is but poor appetite and then complained of sore tummy at bedtime. Pale/sore stomach Mon morning. Thu, Fri and Mon off school. Probably back tomorrow though. No diarrhea.
DH: Just called to say he has diarrhea but he is away on business...

HairyGrotter · 04/12/2012 07:12

I get around 5-6 stomach bugs a year, my GP said when it gets to one a month, then I need to panic. I've a very weak stomach, but I recover very quick. I had the norovirus a few years back, went down for 24hrs, started to feel more human 48hrs later, my sister went down about 12hrs after me and she was out for about a week, she rarely gets stomach bugs, she's more of a 'cold and flu' girl.

So far this year, I've had 4 stomach bugs, I'm expecting to get hit soon, just hope it's after Christmas. My only problem is that I'm a lone parent, so I sometimes have to 'go out' to get supplies as I don't often have someone nearby. My DD has a strong stomach and is also surprisingly quick to recover, she has only puked 3 times since she was born, she's 4 now! She's spent most of her life hearing me puke, poor sod!

Hope all who have had it are feeling a little less shit

Acky123 · 04/12/2012 21:54

OMG. Yesterday I felt better but today the runs are back with a vengeance.
I'm in bed lying on a towel, scared to go to sleep. My stomach is cramping horrendously and making terrible noises.
I'm so fed up I want to cry. When will I feel better???
Supposed to be back at work on Thursday, then on annual leave for a week, how the he can I get anything done like this? :(

OP posts:
lovebunny · 04/12/2012 22:04

takataka: i couldnt get out of bed for the 24 hours i was ill; i puked and shat where i lay
thank you for raising that - it matches my experience completely. lasted three days before i could move at all.

Mumlar · 04/12/2012 22:25

My dd was violently sick all over herself one morning last week, very lethargic and sleepy all day; sick once more later that day, all down my back. The next day she had bright yellow diahorrea. Do you think this qualifies as Norovirus or do we still have that to look forward to? She is still not eating properly ten days later and is still complaining of tummy ache.

I agree about staying in. If I overhear another person saying something like ' Oh, he was sick all day yesterday but he's fine now', I might just scream.

redwellybluewelly · 04/12/2012 23:10

I have had the full on dogs wotsits retrovirus twice, last time was last June and I was crying in pain due to the stomach cramps, lasted 72hours. Didn't eat for a week, lost a stone in weight. Have had plenty of 24hr ones but that one really stays with me.

I never got sick bugs pre DD but now have them every six months. Even though I am scrupulous with hand washing. Just waiting for our pre Christmas bout of D&V.

redwellybluewelly · 04/12/2012 23:10

Retrovirus? ??
norovirus
