White, black, blue, red or silver.

Where have all the rest of the colours gone?

I loved my dark green astra a few years ago. And I've always wanted a deep burgundy car, or a dark dark purple one. But there just isn't the choice.

I'm amazed at all the shades of white. I have an 'Arctic White' car which so different in colour from, say, a white Fiat 500.

My cars have been:
blue, silver, black, black
DH's (since I have known him):
Black, Black, Black, Silver

Ok - fair point!

Many years ago, red was far and away the most popular colour. I know this because I'm a teacher and my class used to regularly do traffic surveys!
More recently, it became silver (possibly due to the strange pigment in red paint that made the cars look a bit dull after a few years) and another scientific survey I conducted on my neighbours' cars in my cul-de-sac (15 out of 18) showed this to be true. Fact. Not up for debate.

However, I've noticed nowadays that dark metallic grey is creeping in. If you want purple, the Qashqai (sp) comes in a nice shade!

WellingtonBoot · 01/12/2012 19:00

The manufacturer say my car is Lunar Silver.
I call it Electric Beige.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 01/12/2012 19:02

Mine's burgundy and my previous car was gold. I detest silver cars with a passion.

YuleBritannia · 01/12/2012 19:05

It's safer to have a white or silver car because it's more likely to be seen at night or so I've read. I suppose light grey or yellow might come under that head, too. Mine's charcoal but was too good a buy to miss.

FryOneFatManic · 01/12/2012 19:06

My car is silver because it was a good car available at the right price. Colour comes way down the list of requirements.

Although I'd avoid red if I could, always seems to fade.

TheSitChewAceChien · 01/12/2012 19:07

Mines metallic green.
I didn't choose it for its colour though, just liked it cos it was what I could afford and it was all shiny and lovely until I drove it into some ruddy big bins

I'd like a red one next- the most visible colour apparently, so that'd be nice...Fed up of people stepping out in front of me!

Inclusionist · 01/12/2012 19:14

Today I saw a brand new Ford Focus in a metallic red that really looked like a glossy, brand name lipstick and I wanted it.

I've just bought a year old VW estate. Choice: silver or black.

MrsReiver · 01/12/2012 19:19

We used to have a lovely dark green car, but we've got a boring silver one now as it was the right car at the right price. It's nice enough but it's a nightmare to find in car parks and DH never seems to be away from the jet wash.

fryone You're right about red cars, but they don't fade evenly leaving you with a car that appears to have some kind of rash.

OpheliaPayneAgain · 01/12/2012 20:21

When I was looking for a new car, the dealer had a vile (oh it was vile) little sports car in a disgusting shade of 1970's orange. I just couldnt see anyone willing to spend 40K buying.

Bingdweller · 01/12/2012 20:29

We have had:

Electric blue
Navy
Black
Silver
Metallic dark grey (described midnight)

We're boring fuckers really....

lucertola28 · 01/12/2012 20:42

I have red, much easier to spot in the car park amongst all the silver ones! I want a dark grey one next though as think they look really nice.

MrsRogerSterling · 01/12/2012 20:47

I have a white car or 'Candy White' as the manufacturer calls it. Have never had a white car before but love it. Previous was charcoal colour.

CustardIsMyNemesis · 01/12/2012 20:53

I have a white car at the moment as any other colour cost at least £300 more.

It has a lot to do with resale, I watched something earlier in the year where they had 2 nearly identical cars in make/age/milage one purple, one black. The black car was being sold for £450 more than the purple.

germyrabbit · 01/12/2012 20:56

i really don't care what colour my car is Grin does it really matter?

WasLostNowamFound · 01/12/2012 21:06

Red, Red, Black, White, White, Black, Red, Purple (Audi colour), Black, and Black...to date.

Dislike Gold or Beige, they look like slow-moving jobbies Grin

RobotLover68 · 01/12/2012 21:12

I bought an Aubergine coloured Astra when I was 21 - I loved that car, never gave me a day's trouble

BackforGood · 01/12/2012 21:12

Bucking the trend here - 1 of ours is a dark grey and the other is green. Or is this only for new cars ?

Red may well be the most visible colour but it didn't stop my red car being hit by another driver and written off Sad

I've noticed a few matt black cars - why. It looks like an undercoat Confused

Silver car now (not my first choice- they 'vanish' in rain/fog but the car had everything else I wanted)

MrsReiver · 01/12/2012 21:32

Isn't yellow supposed to be the most visible colour for cars?

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 01/12/2012 21:33

The cars I've owned have been mid-blue, racing green, bright red, electric blue (loved that colour) and now I have silver. I've only ever had second (or more) hand cars so haven't had that much choice when it comes to colour. Having said that, I'd never have an orange, yellow or brown car. Even if I saw the perfect car at a great price, if it was one of those colours it would be a deal breaker.

Glitterknickaz · 01/12/2012 21:34

Well I'd have liked something more colourful.
From the last two motability cars I've ordered though (so over past four years) most brochures have two shades of blue, black, white, grey and that's about it to select from.

Any other colour is an 'extra' and ££££

Which is a shame cos car colours are getting samey. I'm glad 'our' car is green.
