I have a horrid cold and one symptom is sneezing a lot. I keep pissing myself :( Does anyone else resort to incontinence pads?

Lonecatwithkitten · 01/12/2012 22:26

Unfortunately bigger more serious medical fish to fry than incontinence.

TeaAndTinselMakeChristmasShine · 01/12/2012 22:43

only for my third cough of the year, trying to build up to a somersault on the trampolining and the last five minutes of a hockey match when changing direction suddenly is challenging

I hide them at the back of the wardrobe and feel ashamed they are there

onetoomanytoo · 01/12/2012 22:55

incontinance is nothing to be embaressed about,
always envive is the best, but tena are just as good,

i don't go anywhere with out mine now, better to be dry and comfortable than
wandering around town with wet pants!

and it means i can go on the trampoline again!!

neverputasockinatoaster · 01/12/2012 23:21

They are a regular feature of my shopping list.

I have a huge number of allergies and my sneezes could start an avalanche or deafen a passing person. I either sneeze with my legs crossed and clench -thus injuring myself by pulling muscles- or wear pads.

I've pulled too many muscles sneezing to add to the risk!

My pelvic fllor was rubbish before the children and they were both emergency exit jobs so I have no excuse!

goralka · 01/12/2012 23:26

this is SO embarrassing - I actually nicked a packet from lidl the other day cos I was too ashamed to buy them and all the checkout staff know me.

GrimAndHumourlessAndEven · 02/12/2012 00:33

jeex goralka don't DO that, ffs. You don't want a criminal conviction for crying out loud, for nicking sodding tena ladies. All these stores prosecute for theft, you were bloody well lucky not to have been caught. My god.

SoloRolo · 02/12/2012 02:05

goralka-Please don't be too embarrassed to buy incontinence products, could you try your local chemist rather than a supermarket where you know the staff?

I have worked in a small chemist where we sold lots of potentially embarrassing products every day, but selling tena lady or haemorrhoid cream is absolutely no different to selling aspirin or plasters as far as the staff are concerned.

If it helps, try going in to the shop with the mindset that you are buying them for a friend/neighbour/aunt if any one asks (which they won't). Hth

Pictureperfect · 02/12/2012 17:37

Have you been to your doctor? With all the adverts for things like tena lady people assume becoming incontinent is part of getting a bit older where as often people can be helped. There's a lot of help out there and it's nothing to be embarrassed about so if you haven't already please pop along to your gp for a chat

MrsJingleBells74 · 02/12/2012 17:42

I had to during pregnancy, every time I coughed, sneezed or vomited (which I did a lot) I lost a bit of wee. Blush

Pictureperfect · 02/12/2012 17:43

I just read the post saying physio didn't help, please go back to your gp and insist on a referral to a urologist, like another poster said she had a tiny op and no longer has the problem, doctors see these kind of things every single day

SecretSquirrels · 02/12/2012 17:45

I dread getting a cold and the inevitable chest infection that follows. It triggers my asthma and the cough usually takes weeks to go. I get hay fever in summer as well. The stress incontinence causes me more distress than the illness.

Narked · 02/12/2012 17:55

There are medical solutions to this and you don't have to suffer. Go and tell your GP - and tell them that pelvic floor exercises haven't helped.

alemci · 02/12/2012 17:56

I must admit to having this problem at times particulary if I need the loo and don't go straight away. I suddenly sneeze and it is too late.

I should go to the GP really but has got better of late.

maras2 · 02/12/2012 17:56

I wish that they were available when my pelvic floor was shot to whatever.40 years ago it was either manky old Dr.Whites or squashed up loo roll.Nearing 60 now and for some reason pelvic floor seems more intact than ever.Must be due to subliminal messages < Kegels,Maras,Kegels and more flipping Kegles >Sorry got carried away with my old lady bits.Thank Goodness for any sanitary product that is discrete and doesn't chaff.

Mabelface · 02/12/2012 18:00

Definitely go to the doctor and chat about it. I suffer from urge incontinence, and medication has transformed my life. You don't have to put up with it.

Nothingontvat3am · 02/12/2012 19:04

I'm waiting for my physio appointment in the new year fingers (legs?? Grin crossed) I'll be a whole new woman! Or at least be able to sneeze, cough and when necessary vomit without flooding the place. Until then tenas are my friend.

allbie · 02/12/2012 19:20

Yee Gods gals...this thread is making me do my pelvic floors in rapid succession! Crickey, I have four DC and regularly go running with no accidents. Am I just bloody lucky or has doing the exercises actually been the best thing I've ever done?

SecretSquirrels · 03/12/2012 11:26

allbie I suspect some form of damage in childbirth is the root of all this and you may just be lucky. I had prolapses following two very quick labours and large babies (14 years ago). I have had physio and seen urologist etc.
The PVEs most certainly help me under normal circumstances when done ruthlessly but the additional stress of a severe cough is too much.

Queenmarigold · 03/12/2012 12:30

You can get pelvic floor toners on prescription i think. Save yourself £50 and pay £7 or whatever instead!

E11e · 29/12/2012 09:07

So relieved to find this thread and see I'm not on my own with this... Have had a chest infection for nearly 3 months and the horror of wetting myself at work was too much! Finally gave in and bought some using the self-service till in Tesco.

Total embarrassment yesterday though when my youngest Son went to fetch my purse from my handbag and came back into the lounge brandishing one shouting " it's a nappy" in front of everyone!! Don't think I will ever get over the horror.... Blush

Lovecat · 29/12/2012 09:20

I was damaged in childbirth and after 3 years of physio and kegels with no improvement whatsoever. I couldn't run, jump, cough, anything, it was miserable.

I went to the Drs and was referred for an op, called a TVT (details here), sort of like a hernia op for your bladder - it was day surgery, and the effects were instantaneous - I could cough normally, jump about, run, it was brilliant.

However, I had to lose weight for it and was warned that being overweight would put extra strain on the bladder and make it less effective. Although I can still trampoline and star jump without worry, now that I've put some weight on Blush when I cough badly I still have to resort to the Tena Ladies. This lurgy I've had over Christmas has been awful and I've ended up getting the big ones - a good incentive to lose weight again!
