Just made a point, early on about other peole needing more time for various reasons. It was ignored. I get annoyed at people doing 20 on 60 mile an hour roads. That's because it's dangerous. I try to understand if people are lonely and want a quick hello at a checkout. Don't really give a damn what you think.

EllenParsons · 29/11/2012 20:32

YABU to some extent. Yes it is annoying when people really take excessively long but I think there is a lot to be said for patience and just remaining calm.
I was at the Tesco self service till yesterday, normal speed, not super fast but not dawdling either, and a guy behind me barged up and started shouting at me "get out the fucking way" etc and all this - I was really shocked and it did upset me actually. I'm not saying this is what you are doing at all (I'm sure you're not!) but overly stressing about the time someone takes in the queues can lead to people getting aggressive like this arse who started shouting at me. People all just need to calm down!

sneezecakesmum · 29/11/2012 20:32

Personally my purse is in my handbag and it takes 10 seconds to get and take the money out!!! I can never pack as fast as they can scan the shopping- almost but not quite!

Just out of interest how long do you take to pay if you have 10 items to pack?

Obviously if you've one item you CAN have the money ready!

MavisG · 29/11/2012 20:34

Use lots of butter to waterproof bread, don't have salad in the butty, have it on the side.

HumphreyCobbler · 29/11/2012 20:35

The OP wasn't really talking about the talking was she, rather people who can't be arsed to have their money ready as a basic courtesy to those waiting behind.

purpleraindance · 29/11/2012 20:38

when doing my big shop i always ensure i know my purse/vouchers/car park ticket (to get refund) & money off vouchers are rather than the checkout girl asking me & then me dither looking for them.

thanks for the support to the non potty mouths & lunch suggestions..... oat cajes are sounding yum :-)

purpleraindance · 29/11/2012 20:41

am talking about people like me - able bodied who just dont think about other people...
As I said, how does she know?

MyComplicatedLife · 29/11/2012 20:43

Purple - YABU and you know it. But really, other posters are missing the point!

HumphreyCobbler · 29/11/2012 20:45

well she doesn't always know. But as she doesn't shout "Get your fucking purse out shit bag" when she is in the queue I think that probably no one in the flesh gets offended.

Sorry to talk about you in the third person OP

Always a bad idea to go shopping on an empty stomach.

purpleraindance · 29/11/2012 20:50

of course i dont shout-scream-huff-puff at the ditherers.... i use a forum to sound off on & maybe am bu but to be called nasty names simply shows the class of a small % of mnusers - being called a twat has made me pmsl as far as im aware is twats are very useful..

please keep the insults coming as making me smile.... ;-)

"must be so unreasonable not wanting to q for half hour cause you are disorganised"

Oh the irony. If you were more organised then you would not need to go to the shop during the busiest part of the day, and then be annoyed by people who might want to natter, or make sure their shopping is packed before they pay. Maybe find an extra five mins in the morning to buy your lovely shop bought sandwich then??

And speaking from a checkout lady POV, it is nice to be able to chat to the customers who might see only my face in the day, as everyone else is too busy, or understands that some people don;t want their money and purse to hand as they want to pack first, or just might have other hidden issues that hold them up.

If I want to rush I go to the self serve tills now.

well, I try. They are even more evil than any ditherer or rushed person.

That said, if you just have one sandwich, I would ask nicely to queue jump. Rarely do people mind, and I (I don;t work on checkouts anymore) never minded when sat there on the checkouts.

If I have a massive shop I sometimes even let people queue jump if they have less than, say, three items. They are, TBH, the ones normally in a rush.

crikey, could you imagine the posts on here if i asked to queue jump - really. of course i feel for people who delib take their time as their lonely & just want to chat but why not pop to one side & let others go in front so you can have a guilt free chat without holding others up. but im more talking about ditheres who dont know where they are let alone where their purses are. im disorganised as im rarely at home working 60 hours a week + daily clubs not getting home til 8pm so sorry i like to cook dinner & then enjoy an hour of tv/reading before bed rather than making 6 rounds of sarnies - dc have money for lunch as well :-)

purpleraindance · 29/11/2012 21:05

no self service tills in my village :-\

psychomum5 · 29/11/2012 21:09

so you have five children too, and pregnant with another, Yes??

and you work many hours?

and they do many clubs??

that was once me, and believe me, i never went to the shops at lunch time. I made those lunches for my children, and for me, and bloody well chilled out for the 45min lunch break. T'was LOVELY Grin

I also admit to queue jumping. But yes, you might get lynched if you asked here Wink

psychomum5 · 29/11/2012 21:12

now I am a SAHM, due to a child with an immune deficiency and so has much time off school, making it unfair on my employer to constantly need time off.

I can dither if I want. I often do. Normally as my brian is always fuzzled by thinking about each of the childrens after school needs and everything else.

purpleraindance · 29/11/2012 21:16

4 dc, 1 dh who is self emp so works even longer hours than me + pregnant. maybe im just jealous of how much spare time some people seem to have..... my lack of sleep maybe spent with ones head on ones desk power napping lol but dont want to end up a heffer hence power walking to shops..... :-)

take your sarnie ingredients with you to work in tupperware (other brands are available) and a coolbag and make your snadwich at work.

Viviennemary · 29/11/2012 21:23

I totally hate queues in supermarkets. I run up and down looking for the shortest one, but have to take into consideration how full the baskets are , how much has already been unloaded, how quick the cashier looks, how likely they are to have to ring the bell for assistance. That always happens to the person in front of me. Even worse than the ones searching for their card are the ones at the end of it all, who have to put everything back in their purse, zip up the purse zip up their handbag, put on their gloves and so on and so on. Grrrr!!
