Does my DH not know me at all? - odd birthday pressie

It's my 34th birthday today. My husband presented me with a bright red pair of converse canvas boots for my birthday.

I am on mat leave at the moment and leave the house wearing sturdy leather ankle boots and a smartish winter wool coat given that it is the winter. The only footwear I had mentioned that I needed was a pair of slippers.

To make life easier for my me, my sisters and mum write Christmas lists - I had pretty standard stuff on it - not requesting a Cartier watch or a new car, but def def def not requesting the same kind of shoes I had when I was 13. He read this list but still decided I needed new summer shoes.

I imagine this is just standard male present buying, but I am still p-d off!!

Oh no! I just bought DH a pair of Batman Converses that he's never mentioned wanting, for Christmas, just because I thought they were cool and look nice and he does need new casual shoes and... I dunno.

He's gonna hate them, isn't he?! Grin

He is at least a trendy-show type person. If you're really not, and have previously suggested other more suitable stuff, it does seem a bizarre thing to decide you'd like.

Did he get them from TK Maxx? Might explain the randomness of the colour/suitability for season.

ihatemycat · 29/11/2012 12:50

Say they don't fit and you need to return them...
My dh bought me some purple boots once, luckily they genuinely didn't fit - phew!

We can all miscalculate and get a present wrong from time to time because our perceptions of people are rooted in our own personalities as well as the one the recipient projects. However, a pattern of poor gift giving is IMO indicative of a thoughtless, lazy, or selfish personality at worst, and one with poor social skills at best.

For people who are successful at work or in hobbies, the latter is obviously not the case since their social skills are functioning perfectly well in those arenas.

DHs can't buy presents ordinary presents.

Expensive tec yes, but a simple top or cheapish jewellery no.

I honestly don't think they notice what we wear.

*trendy-shoe

And preferring shower gel doesn't make you high maintainence at all!

Happy Birthday Thanks

I love converse! My fave shoes.

firemansamisnormansdad · 29/11/2012 12:57

He's read something somewhere that converse trainers are the norm for young, trendy things. So be grateful that he thinks you are a young and trendy thing. My DH once got me some lighter fluid refill. I don't smoke. But then I found another present which was one of those cooking blowtorch thingies for creme brulee. Which I don't like. God, we're ungrateful aren't we?

ATailOfTwoKitties · 29/11/2012 12:58

I have an 11-yr-old daughter who would practically mug you for them (and indeed a 14-yr-old boy who would do the same, but they probably aren't canoe-sized like his huge hooves). is he suggesting you get in touch with your inner child?

(You could put them away till the summer/the baby grows into them/hell freezes over, whichever comes first.)

FredFredGeorge · 29/11/2012 12:58

FFS, he's your DH, tell him you don't like them, you appreciate the thought, but let's exchange them for something appropriate.

He got it wrong, he tried to surprise you, let him know - YABU for an enthusiastic thankyou for something you didn't like from your DH, why would you enthusiastically thank him? Of course he's going to be bad at knowing what you like if you're enthusiastic about things you don't like?
