Is this risking my children's lives?

Namechanged as the photos will out me!

We've been investigating a new car to fit 3dc across the back and really like this one but look what happened - pics on profile (I hope). Sad

The back seats are each full width but there is kind of bulge in the side moulding at exactly the same height as the side impact shields. So the Kiddy seats are pushed inwards.

So - would you abandon this option, or is this a "safe" degree of tilt? I won't compromise their safety obviously. I just don't know if this would.

i wouldnt risk it - personally.

i think if they seat is not squarely and securely in place then on any impact its likely to move.

Personally and since you've obviously given this a lot of thought, I would abandon that model and try to find one that does accommodate you safely.
Can you stick with what you've got for now and, when two are out of proper seats and onto boosters get a new car/

Softlysoftly · 29/11/2012 00:41

It looks on the first photo to be quite a big tilt, I'm not sure I'd risk it. Plus wouldn't it be uncomfortable on long journeys?

Do they need to be 3 across? What about a 2nd row of seats?

Bogeyface · 29/11/2012 00:43

I wouldnt because regardless of how bad it is now, and it is pretty bad, the baby will soon be in a front facer (well, sooner that you will buy a new car) and then you wouldnt be able to fit three of the front facers in.

Discount the rearward facing, and base it on whether you can get three front facing ones in, as you will be using those for a lot longer than you will 2 front and one rear facing.

Bogeyface · 29/11/2012 00:46

Softly you are not allowed to mention a second row on MN! I did because we have 5 children that travel with us and was told that buying a car that fitted them all was having the wrong priorities! Second row seats are not great in a bad rear end shunt, and I should not drive any of my children anywhere rather than risk that. Apparently.

Well this is the thing that causes me to wonder if it might actually be ok - all 3 seats felt absolutely solid. The baby carrier is on an isofix base. It would shift over more, or fit in the middle with the seatbelt, but didn't feel secure there.

We can't stick with what we've got sadly and can't upgrade as far as a 7-seater without either borrowing money (we really don't want to) or going for an older model with 60k on the clock. That might be what we have to do but I worry about reliability.

The only other option is swapping one child from the safe Kiddy seat to a narrower one like a Britax Prince - I can't find any safety ratings for that though.

Aargh - this might be more urgent than we thought - have to go in for monitoring of the baby now as there's been reduced movement for a while and I'm 37wks already. Sod's law - it'll be dancing by the time we get there but I still just looked at the current car and panicked. I hate feeling rushed into decisions and thought this one was sorted already. Sigh. (at myself).
