I went to my hairdresser today.

  1. Could she pop the 'sheet' around my shoulders
  2. Could I pop my spectacles off
  3. I can now pop them back on
  4. Could I pop my head back over the basin
  5. Could I pop back to the first chair
  6. Pop the newspaper over there
  7. Could I pop my card number in
  8. Could I pop the card out of the machine

I've never heard it used to many times. Is it modern speak or was I being patronised? Now I'm wondering if I can tolerate another visit.

I have to say that I used to 'pop down to the shop' for something needed immediately though.

Thank you maddening. It is now running around my head with the right words at least.

Popping is one of my pet hates. I was talking to my sister just yesterday about how much we both hate when people say pop. Glad we're not alone.

Gilberte · 27/11/2012 21:18

"Gaaah, yanbu. I went for a smear test once and was told to pop up on the table. I'be not been able to hear 'pop' used like that since without wanting to run screaming from the room."

And when they continue with "could you just let your legs "flop" open.....eughh.

Popping followed by flopping- yikes

I'll go you one better, a woman i work with does not only pop but she does it cheekily

i'm popping down for a cheeky fag
i popped to the shop for a cheeky bottle of wine
I'm going to pop to the pub for a few cheeky after work drinks
She also has a wee cheeky chocolate bar a break time

that is annoying!

OTheYuleManatee · 27/11/2012 21:41

One after-work drink is cheeky.

Several after-work drinks is lounging on your sofa with one hands in its pants, having eaten all your crisps and thrown the packets all over the floor, while grinning inanely at you and giving you the finger.

My DH says this, it is SICKENING.

Ragwort · 28/11/2012 12:22

I hate the expression 'cheeky' even more so to 'cheekily pop out for fag' or whatever is gross.

What is wrong with the Queen's English? Grin

It's when midwives use it in labour it makes me laugh. At 9 months pregnant I don't pop anywhere. If they said "can you lumber yourself heavily onto the bed" it would be far more accurate!

willyoulistentome · 28/11/2012 13:41

anewyear it means 'farting' in our house too!

Spatsky · 28/11/2012 13:41

I was fine with pop until reading all this thread, now pop sounds daft. You've ruined it for me op.

I say pop all the time, so there.

anewyear · 29/11/2012 10:53

Grin @ will you listen to me..

ChestnutsRoastingonaWitchesTit · 29/11/2012 10:56

A woman I know says "bob" instead of "pop".

"Just going to bob down to the office"

Every time she says it I want to kill her in the face.
