I had a complete abdominal hysterectomy earlier this year. A couple of nights ago I was out with a friend who had had a particularly uncomfortable smear test that morning and kept saying 'I'd have a hysterectomy anyday if I thought it would put a stop to all that' and even 'You're lucky, you don't have to worry about these things anymore'.
I did say 'well, its not that simple' but I was quite annoyed that she would be so dismissive of what was, in fact, a major operation and kind of make out that what she went through was worse.
She's a really nice friend in loads of ways, but does tend to bring things back to herself a lot.
AIBU and over sensitive to think she shouldn't have made those remarks?

it'd have annoyed me.. but then iw ould have come back with retort to put her in her place.. said in a jokey way of course.

but its said. you know whats she like. prehasop mention it to her that it upset you.

SecretCervix · 26/11/2012 16:35

YANBU. Who says that? I take it she is aware you have had one?

Slothlorien · 26/11/2012 16:36

YANBU very insensitive comments. Sad

Ignore her - competitive pain is just that.........a pain.

Alternatively, just look at her with your eyebrows raised, and say nothing until she realises and goes red with embarrassment.

Or blithely sing....."no more periods......lovely........no more pain.......lovely........aren't I a lucky lucky girl".

Having had a Csection, which is also major abdominal surgery, I would take the smear test any day over the surgery.

And from what my mum has told me, they don't always take the cervix away in a hysterectomy anyway so smear test may still be needed.

YANBU. My sister had a hysterectomy earlier this year and she had quite a hard time. Part of her bowel was stuck to her pelvis and she had to have a massive blood transfusion..these are the sort of complications that can occur with hysterectomies! She was in hospital for over a week etc! You have my permission to use my sisters experience as an example of how serious a procedure it is..and she's moaning about a one minute, 3 yearly smear!

She is being ignorant and you have every right to be upset.

LOL WhenShall. Maybe I'll try that.

In fairness to your friend, I have several friends who have had hysterectomies and they reccomend it to anyone and everyone who complains of period pain etc. I haven't had one and don;t want one but to listen to them you'd think it was the best thing they've ever done. YANBU if it upsets you but don;t judge her too harshly either.
