A school run mum blocked the driveway then refused to move when asked to

I work a few doors down from a school/preschool as a nanny. The house has a doubled dropped kerb and double driveway.
I'd dropped my charge off at school and was getting the younger ones into the car when one of the preschool mums parked her huge 4x4 across the dropped kerb of the house I work in.
I asked her politely to move her car as I was going out and told her she can't legally block the driveway. She got quite arsey saying that she was late and there was no where else to park.
Was I being unreasonable to ask her to move??
Was I being unreasonable to report her to the local pcso after school whilst they were monitoring the parking?

I did hear that before the Toyota Prius gets to us from Japan on a huge oilburning tanker that it actually goes to somewhere like Canada for it's parts on a huge oilburning tanker and then to Norway or somesuch for it's engine on a huge oilburning tanker and then gets shipped to Europe on a huge oilburning tanker.

Even if that's not strictly accurate, it still has to come from Japan doesn't it? Or are they made in Britain?

PessaryPam · 26/11/2012 13:39

Ah so the deserving poor can emit as much as they like then? Please stop dressing up your prejudices in pseudo science Offred.

Offred · 26/11/2012 13:44

I have no control or illusions that I have control over other people's emissions. I retain the right to judge people who don't do what they can or what is reasonable or considerate, even more so when they have means and choose to behave selfishly and inconsiderately. That's all.

Hobbitation · 26/11/2012 13:46

YANBU, OP. It's illegal to block a vehicle in a drive with a dropped kerb. If you are late, you are late, you drive round and round until you find a legal parking space and you sign the late book.

Dromedary · 26/11/2012 13:47

Yes, the Chinese produce a lot of emissions. That's because they're seeking to emulate our Western lifestyles, of course.
Producing more emissions in the UK doesn't help, you know, it all adds up and the more emissions we produce the faster the global warming process goes. Per capita we still produce way more than the Chinese.

Labootin · 26/11/2012 13:48

I have a porche cayenne (it has cream calfskin seats irrc)
Dh has a landrover

I also have a driver and live in the heinous (to MN) country of Dubai so when the nice man at the pump (note you do not do it yourself) fills my gas guzzler it only costs about 29p per litre (conversion rate may fluctuate)
Of my tax free (or should I say my dh's tax free as I am not legally allowed to work without mydh's written permission)

there I think I have MN bingo (ignores two children)

School run rap

I'm a school run mum
Get outta my way,
Don't you dare take my place
At the Pay and Display.

I'm a school run mum
In a four by four,
Of course I can park
And block your front door.

I'm a school run mum
Driving up on the kerb
What do you mean,
I've got some nerve?

I'm a school run mum,
So what d'you expect?
Zig zags, yellow lines,
I show no respect.

I'm a school run mum
I don't care what you say
I'm entitled, I'm Delightful!
(And I'm heading your way.)

lashing hmm not bad!

OwlLady · 26/11/2012 14:18

seeing as this thread has gone off at a tangent and is now talking about emissions, I would like to ask why the council give children schools miles away out of catchment that their parents or transport then have to drive them to? I don't mean in the case of special needs schools as that is specific to needs. But to normal folk who just cannot get into their catchment school so get given a school miles away? I can walk to our closest school for my youngest but have to drive miles twice a day to his school and back because there is no space. Does the local authority have an obligation to meet their targets in other ways? is eligibility criteria the only thing that matters?

Just back home and today I decided to take the 4x4 due to the flooding around. At the end of a small dark lane I found a mum stranded with a young child in the middle of a huge puddle. She had flooded the engine and it was coming in the doors. Luckily for her, I raised the suspension and used my tow bar to pull her out of the puddle. I then drove her and her daughter to a place where they could ring the AA and sit in the warm to wait. Pretty lucky I am along in my big, selfish, inconsiderate, unnecessary 4x4 ... You really can't make this shit up.

(High fives all the 4x4 drivers)

EverlongLovesHerChristmasRobin · 26/11/2012 15:15

Doing it for the sisters. All because you can Wink

Dromedary, there is an interesting graph on this site showing energy consumption per capita.

In Saudi Arabia residential use makes up 50pc of energy demand, and over two thirds of that is air-conditioning. I believe Labootin that Dubai is similar in it's profligacy.

Gin I salute you, as a former Nissan Patrol owner.

BabylonPI · 26/11/2012 15:40

This happened outside our school this morning too, the woman who parked managed to block 4 householders on their drives - they were not happy at all!

When the driver came back to the car she said she had no choice as she has two little children and no pushchair in the car Hmm

Both children were walking (approx 3 years old - maybe twins)

The house owners were having none of it.

In her defence, it may have been the first time she blocked a drive (or 4) but they made an example of her and called the police, as well as reporting her to school.

So joy of joys, as vice chair of govs, we get to talk about it tonight and see what we can do about it. Confused

BabylonPI · 26/11/2012 15:41

Ginandtonic Grin

Love it!! Oh and well done you for staging a rescue, we've got some bad floods here!

TwoFacedCows · 26/11/2012 15:47

well done you gin. hope the flooding does not affect you too much, where ever you are. - and anyone else!

Janeatthebarre · 26/11/2012 15:52

She blocked four driveways? Shock. Was she driving a double decker bus?

Labootin · 26/11/2012 15:55

Pessary..kinda playing fast and loose on the ol' interesting....

But yes I do believe Dubai has a shocking record .

i once worked out my carbon footprint...eek

(I used to be a bit of a lentil weaver back in Blighty which makes me even more of a hypocrite)

Offred · 26/11/2012 16:38

Fail to see why that's relevant to my judging gin since that isn't an example of having an unnecessary and pointless car in an inappropriate area, doesn't sound like an urban area... Well done though! Grin

In our primary school the catchment are is spread across two parish churches 2 miles apart so is huge. Either way I'd say at least 80% of the parents who drive live within one mile of the school.

TwoFacedCows · 26/11/2012 16:40

haha! thats what I was thinking Jane!

alemci · 26/11/2012 16:54

YANBU and the driver should not be rude when you asked her to move. I would be mortified if I was blocking someone's drive.

sue52 · 26/11/2012 16:56

Gin , you're a hero. Big round of applause for the 4x4.

Ginandtonicandamassageplease · 26/11/2012 17:12

Offred - sorry to disappoint but I live in the Home Counties and it's not all that treacherous in general.
