DD1 (11 YO) watched a 15 rated horror film at their Halloween party.

She said after the party had ended how they'd all watched the film The Hole. It was a party for only those in her house and she was with other people her own age, but because the form she's in is 'vertically stacked' (is that what they call it?) there are children from her age up to school leaving age (which is a great way of doing it I reckon).

I thought she'd said this film was a 12 rated, but it's on Film four in half an hour and it's rated a 15!

I'm a bit of a horror fan but haven't seen it before. She said it really freaked them out and some (who I know are only 11/12) couldn't watch and were turning away, but obviously didn't want to not watch because everyone else was).

She's been watching 12s for a while now, but only ones I've watched and know are OK, she's seen one or two 15s, but again, only one's I know won't give her sleepless nights.

AIBU to wonder WTF the school was thinking taking the decision away from me? It's a bit late to do anything now, but if they think a 15's OK, why not an 18 next? Maybe fuck their heads with The Ring, or 28 Days Later? Why not?

Sorry if it's ia boarding school I sound thick ! School are needing to be the parent in that situation so shouldn't be letting 11 yr olds watch this shit. I'd be steaming angry.

The party was from 6 - 10pm, and yes, the party was in the school building, thrown by the teachers.

I think I'd react in much the same way as you. I suppose you mean her boarding house is stacked? At my DC's boarding school, years 7-9 were in junior boarding houses and the senior houses were years 10-13 so we never had this kind of problem. Why do some people not realise that films are given age ratings for a reason?!

I saw the hole. Are you sure it's a 15? It was a kiddy horror film. I don't know any 11 year olds who would be disturbed by it..

The film's just started. I'm glad I saw it was the one she was talking about so I can watch it through her eyes.

Sticking to age certificates on films is one of my things - I would be ready to throttle someone about this. Especially at age 11 when IMO a lot of kids become highly aware of external threats and more likely to be able to take in just how scary a film like this might be.

I would make a written complaint initially and ask for a meeting with the head teacher. Their decision-making process needs overhauling.

What amazes me is that we live in a time when there are more films appropriate for children than you could watch in a lifetime and as much information about exactly what they contain as you could ever need. It is stupid and unnecessary to do this kind of thing.

No, not at all. I went to a grammar school which didn't have boarding facilities and we had a house system too. I guess it was the party and film afterwards. We never had such things!

There are two holes, one is a 15 and there is the more recent hole rated a 12a. Are you sure it is the right hole?

Is that the one with Thora Birch in it? There is another of the same name that I haven't seen but if it's the one that I have then I would not think it appropriate to show to 11 year-olds. Quite apart from the 'horror' aspect, which I think would be genuinely disturbing for younger viewers, it also features plenty of shots of 'older teen' behaviour - snogging, groping, flashing etc.

I take the ratings as just guidelines Joan, and don't mind a bit under the age. It's not always about the swearing or violence either, I just looked up The Others and was surprised to see it's a 12, there's no way I'd let her see that freaky, creepy dead people

As a school they should be sticking to the cert, end of. Ok, I take MY 10 yr old to a 12A but I'm his parent. Not the school's decision to override certificate ratings. Grrrrrrrr and you won't be the only pissed off parent so that'll teach em .

There's is a film called Holes that is a kids film, it's kind of an adventure mystery and its s PG. Was it maybe that she saw?
