To be amazed that an advert like this was being shown in 1985?

I don't know about unreasonable, why are you, "amazed"?

Cozy9 · 24/11/2012 00:51

Because the dangers of smoking were WELL known by then and TV ads for cigarettes had been banned in Britain in the 60s.

Well those particular ads weren't British, were they?

tethersend · 24/11/2012 00:56

It is pretty shocking in retrospect. It just shows how acceptable smoking was up until very recently.

WorraLiberty · 24/11/2012 00:57

Yes but tobacco and cigar advertising continued until 1991 on television so why would you be amazed that an ad like that was being shown in cinemas?

FreudiansSlipper · 24/11/2012 00:58

It was made for south african cinema

far worse things to be amazed by in sa at that time

wigglytuff · 24/11/2012 00:59

Are you sure TV ads were banned in the 60s? I'm sure I remember watching them as a child in the 80s on TV, definitely remember the Hamlet cigar ones in particular.

FreudiansSlipper · 24/11/2012 01:00

i far more pissed off at the women know you place men struggle to clean, cook, feed child, put a wash on you don't adverts that are shown everry day still

Monty27 · 24/11/2012 01:02

Gambling's bad for some people, sunbathing's bad for some people, flying's bad for some people, alcholol's bad for some people.

It was 1985.

Monty27 · 24/11/2012 01:03

Oh sorry, just saw the ciggies at the end Grin

frantic51 · 24/11/2012 01:03

I think cigar advertising continued after the cigarette advertising on TV was banned. Cigarettes continues to be advertised in cinemas until the mid 80s though I think they were banned from U certificate films in the early 70s?

differentnameforthis · 24/11/2012 01:16

Erm ...it was recorded for South Africa.

This is a compilation of four older commercials, made for South African cinema audiences

wigglytuff · 24/11/2012 01:25

frantic51 that would explain it- I had no idea cigars/cigarettes had different rules, I just assumed all tobacco products were the same.

Cozy9 · 24/11/2012 01:38

Yeah I can remember the Hamlet ads with Russ Abbott, think they were still being shown in the 90s.

I can also remember cigarette ads in newspapers/magazines and on billboards, They weren't allowed to show the product though.

I remember the "happiness is a cigar called Hamlet" ads very distinctly. There was always some sort of mishap and tbe ad ended with the bloke smoking a cigar with Bach's Air on a G String playing in the background.
Pipe tobacco continued to be advertised on TV into the '80s too. I recall the one for my dad's favourite St Bruno; they had a guy smoking this vile pipe and polluting the air with clouds of smoke, then it showed beautiful girls sniffing the air and following the smoke, so he ended up with a trail of girls after him. Somewhat implausible even then!
